Orion Camera question new
      #3347750 - 09/21/09 08:59 PM

I might get into imaging. Does anyone have experience with the Orion StarShoot II DeepSpace CCD Camera either color or monochrome? Is this a good camera to start with?

It is a great cam to start with.I have the vII Mono.It works great as an imager.Has somewhat manageable noise(meaning there will be the need for darks to subtract the noise out).Works good with just about any beginner's-intermediate's scopes(ED80,102ED,6-10"newts,maknewts,SCT's,etc...basically any scope you attatch it to will perform well.).
I use it primarily for a guider.Once I did some imaging with it I decided to go bigger and better(like we all do at some point,or several times,in this hobby)and it has been on AG'er duty ever since. And I have never yet had a problem finding a guidestar with a 66ED. They also work flawlessly with SW like Maxim DL,etc...

I upgraded to a Starshoot II mono from a DSI II color. Love it. With the TEC, the noise is pretty minimal. Here's a slew of DSO images I took with this camera:

All of these are short exposure images, typically 60-100 seconds max. Are there better cameras? Sure, but not in this price bracket.

Very good photography. What type of scope and mount did you use?

An LXD75 mount and an AT66ED scope.
