First galaxy shot. Need tips (NGC 7331)
      #3354343 - 09/24/09 05:45 PM Attachment (23 downloads)

Alright, so after doing that planetary nebula (link) , we decided to try something bigger.
There's significant light pollution here (milky way is visible, but it isn't easy), and we couldn't do long exposures due to some as of yet unresolved issue with the mount.
Here it is at any rate: A few dozen shots at 50s each. NGC 7331 being the big one, with NGC 7335 and 7336 also in the shot. The rest of the deer lick group didn't fit in the frame.
I'm not quite sure I've the faintest idea on how to properly process this type of object, although I tried my best.

edit: forgot
Equipment: AZT-14, SXVF-M25C, Registax, Photoshop CS2, maxim DL.

Tinkered a bit in Neat Image. I think it came out better, although I'm not sure if I like the aggressiveness of the noise reduction.

That's a GREAT First Galaxy image.
The only thing that I might see is it's a bit soft in the focus. Other than that, your on your way.

Wow, now that is some focal length! This is your first? Very impressive. I agree with Carl, the focus is a tad off. The only other suggestions I can make is add more subexposures to the stack. It really helps to smooth out the image. Your first one looks better to me even though it has more noise, it's also more crisp.

Thanks all. Yeah, the focal length is both a blessing and a curse. And we still haven't managed to figure out how to focus well. The FWHM method, as well as the star size method is hard, because seeing tends to blur the line between focus and just out of focus. And I'm not sure how to make a bahtinov mask that large.

We'll give more subs a shot next time
