Boy, I sent my scope back to Meade to fix the old vibration Issue my lx90 had.. They told me its going to take 6-8 weeks to fix?? Wow, that's incredible!! I think they do that so you never want to send it again..

This is the normal repair time from both Celestron and Meade...believe me...
I guess they (both companies) have one repair tech and allow him to take 2 hours lunches during his 4 day work week...

You forgot 4 or more 15-minute cigarette breaks per day ... plus arriving at least a half-hour late and leaving at least a half-hour early each day -- thus putting in a solid 16-hour work week.
OMIGOSH! I used to work with this guy!!! (And -- I'm serious -- he once complained to me about never having time to get any serious work done ...)

I think they share one repair tech between them, but he's in Bangalore so the shipping time both ways gets added. He's only paid peanuts but he does have to work 140 hours a week.
Lunch? What's that?

My top ten list of why it takes so long!
10 They are understaffed.
09 The same people who build the scopes, repair them?
08 They want to eat up as much warranty then can?
07 They are completely lazy.
06 Some of the workers think they make 3 subject notebooks, not telescopes.
05 They are very meticulous.
04 They are on a different planet, so takes time to get there and back.
03 They convert it first to a water heater, then back again.
02 They think every day is cinco de mayo.
And the number one reason it takes so long…..
01 They ship all repairs to Dr Clay!!

Boy you guys are rough! It takes that long to get anything repaired these days. I have waited that long for a repair person to show up at the house to do some work. Seriously though, they quote longer periods than they expect so you don't keep calling. And from my experience, when they get a unit in for repair, they go over the entire equipment and tune up every part of it. I sent an LXD55 in for a minor part and I got back a virtually new mount that worked flawlessly. So if my experiences are any measure Mark, you will get back a fine tuned LX90!

George's post is the most reasonable here. There is no need to get into Meade bashing, particularly of the speculative variety.

Not everything.
I recently sent in my DSLR and a couple lenses to Canon for check-up/repair...
Door to door round trip was 10 real days (not business days), and that included ground shipping to them (I'm cheap). They picked up FedEx 2nd day return shipping.

I'm willing to bet those lenses cost more than a telescope...

Depends on the lens and the scope.
My 7" LX200 Mak cost the original purchaser almost $3000 new (I paid much less, thank you Craigslist).
I don't own a single lens worth that much (even new).

Solid argument for owning a backup telescope. [Edited by moderator for political content.] Why buy one when you can have two for twice the price?

Well just got off the phone with Meade, they said my scope was repaired and on its way back? What's funny is I did not receive any notification from them that it even shipped which apparently was 4 days ago.. They could not tell me what was done to the scope.. Hoping it comes back better than it left!!

I'm sure it will. At least it looks like about a month rather than two.
I never had the vibration issue, just alignment issues with my LX90. I sent mine back and it took about 5 weeks round trip last spring. They claimed my LNT was bad, but also sent a new 497EP. All has been well since then.

It has been my experience that whatever the problem, they work over the entire scope and send it back better than new.

I finally received my telescope back from Meade with good and I guess interesting results.. What it went there for..
1)Vibration Issue some batches of lx90’s had in 2007 – Not tested 2)Felt pad on the corrector under the secondary mirror was offset (fixed)
3)Lose small metal fragments on inside of corrector (fixed) What Meade Replaced/Serviced 1)RA PCB board 2)RA Motor 3)Autostar – ???????????? read 4)Collimated 5)Replaced Secondary Cap/Felt Pad 6)Cleaned Corrector & Mirror spotless!!
As I indicated Meade replaced the Autostar with the same hardware version Autostar, not the new version, also the software on the box was old, making it necessary to update it.
I was under the impression that Meade would replace the autostar with the new ep version??
I probably won’t have the opportunity to check out the results first hand, as it’s raining like hell here in Philadelphia and don’t expect to see clear skies until Sunday, especially if the Phillies sweep..

Not surprised you got the original "old" 497 hand controller. BUT---------- I have that one and it works just fine using firmware version 43Eg and Dick Seymour's PATCH software.
