My first color Jupiter sketch new
      #3319178 - 09/06/09 08:35 PM

Here is my first successful try at a color sketch of Jupiter. The sky was clear, seeing good, and moon nearby. Jupiter was showing a lot of details, from time to time, early on a large white storm showed near the equator, and later on the GRS made its appearance on the left.

It was sketched at the eyepiece, using tablet pc, a pressure sensitive pen with Corel painter, pastel/chalk brushes.

I have been trying for a while to use color in my sketches, this is the first one that looked halfway decent. Using color makes things a bit more complex, and it is hard to accurately record all the details present, before Jupiter has rotated too much. I hope to get a few more trys in this season, and see how things turn out.

A stunning digital portrayal Howie! It has the appearance of a watercolor painting. Wonderful use of color and very nicely detailed!

I have to agree on outstanding job and that this really looked like a watercolor to me at first also. Nice details in the object and I can just imagine it would be harder to keep the details as conditions change and with the rotation of earth and Jupiter working against you. Very nicely done.

Howie,

Now that is one very nice Jupiter sketch. Like Rich and Jay stated above it looks like a water color drawing. Very nice color selection too.

Howie,

Neat sketch! You really saw a lot of detail. And you are one of those lucky people who can see colors. It might interest you to know that you're looking down below the cloudtops when you see blue and the GRS actually bulges above the cloudtops.

That equipment you listed sounds interesting--digital magic.

Thanks everyone for taking a look and for the kind comments.

It is always a fun to observe Jupiter when the seeing starts
to allow the details to show, and I had a really good time making the sketch.

Michael, The computer setup is a nice tool, In the end you don’t have a nice physical drawing, or sketch, but it does have a lot of simulated mediums and brushes, the ability to save things, and undo mistakes as your work, it is great for experimenting and playing around with ideas. And for making templates with interesting backgrounds(Jef)

Howie,

An excellent digital image of Jupiter. You have accurately placed the major bands and features over the planet. The colors that you have recorded are also accurate. Keep practicing with the tablet and Corel Painter. They are a fine pair for producing observations. I look forward to your future observations.

Carlos
