How old? What Quality? Celestron "Classical" 7x50?
      #3358954 - 09/27/09 12:16 AM

Some one who knows of my budding interest in astronomy offered me this pair of binoculars:

Celestron Classical
7x50 8 degree FOV
430 Ft/1000 yards

UV Coated
BAK-4 Prisms
Made in Japan

How old are they? What level of quality are they? Finally, what should I offer? They look in good optical shape and, other than some external dust, look all but new.

They sound interesting! My guess as to vintage; about 1980?? They have a larger field of view than the typical 7 degrees of most 7X50's, and if indeed in good condition I myself would consider 150 bucks as being not too much to pay.

By the way, I do believe you made a typo with "7x60..." Should be 7x50, right?

Japan produced a number of wide angle 7x50 binos in the 60s,70s and 80's. Most were reasonable quality. I have a 'Scope' 7x50 with a wider 9.5 degree FOV which I still enjoy using on dark skies. You will notice some 'softness' at the edge of viewing which is normal for a W.A. bino - however at 8 degrees it will not be so marked. The main concern with earlier Japanese binos is the eye relief - which is usually limited - which means you have to get your eyes in close to get the full FOV - you may need to check that out first esp. if you wear glasses. The 'UV' coatings is an earlier form of lens coating and have a deeper bluish hue to them. They are not up to the latest lens coatings standards so you will see some internal reflections on bright objects and the contrast will not be as good.
They are not waterproof so do check for internal deterioration and make sure they are well collimated. These Japanese binos are usually well built and hold collimation well.
They are still usable binos if in good condition and will do well on dark skies where you can take advantage of there 7 mm exit pupil.

Hi Doc,

I would be looking for any Celestron NOVA 7x50 binoculars that I could find--10* and wonderfully made.

These are getting harder and harder to acquire on e-Bay. Good luck.

Best regards,
Dave.

We acquired a pair of 10x50 Celestron "Classicals" in 1985 as one of our door prizes for the Deep South Regional StarGaze. At that time Celestron's premium 50 mm binoculars were the "Nova" series followed by the "Classical" series. I believe I still have some old catalog sheets and/or binocular brochures from the period that shows and describes both. These were dropped by about 1987 in favor of the Ultima Series (soft "leatherette" coverings). The Nova and Classical series lasted from approximately 1980 to about 1986, perhaps a year or two longer on each end of this range.

If in great condition, a pair of 50 mm Classicals is easily worth $100 to $125 and the Nova 50 mm about $25 to $50 more.

Barry Simon

Thanks all. Celestron themselves couldn't tell me more than Barry did just above.

I went ahead and bought them as the price was right. (Somewhat less than some of you have suggested)

Thanks for all the help!

Please feel free to post a photo of your Celestron Classical 7x50 binocular sometime when you have an opportunity. I'd enjoy seeing it! I really like my Celstron 10x50 Ultima binocular that I purchased in 1997.
