Hooked up my Canon 40D to my 8" SCT (prime focus). Alt-az mount, hence could only do 5-sec subs. Captured and stacked using Nebulosity.
10 subs x 5 seconds, ISO1600 (plus 10 darks):

Nice shot. Welcome to madness (and slippery slope) of astrophotography!

Thanks.
So I took the same subs and stacked using DSS(default settings), and got this image:

This seems to show a bit more definition around the cluster itself, but there's also more noise. Is there a way to reduce the noise but keep the definition in DSS?

^^^ And this is AFTER I manually reduced the red noise pixels in Photoshop after stacking in DSS.

Very nice for a first shot!
I would try to push up those subs. When I was shooting in Alt-Az I was getting 15s easily. The difference in signal to noise will be considerable. As signal increases, it makes it easier to pull data out of your noisy shots. Stick to this target for a little while, it's a good one, and there are a lot of stars there to pull out. And it will give you a bit of a control for your experimentation.

I'll try that. Maybe it didn't align very well last night, but there is definite translation movement in 3 subsequent subs (15 seconds). I honestly didn't even try more than 5 seconds just to be safe. Will try longer tonight.

There's actually a good bit more there than you are showing. You've clipped the black point, but just pulled the mid range up a bit and there quite a few stars hanging out in there. Also, next time you're out make sure you take 30 or 40 subs and then you can do a sigma clip stack in DSS which should help with the noise some.
Here's what it looked like after a slight tweak in PS:

Yes, I get the same when I "manipulated" it in PaintShopPro. You can really see the "Propeller" vein.

Thanks, Scott.
I actually didn't do any post-processing other than sharpening what came out of Nebulosity.
I'll try to get more and longer subs tonight. Not sure if I'll get M13 again though, because I was planning on getting up early to catch the Pleiades and Orion. Might try it before going to bed early.
The other thing I need to do is really read the detailed instructions for both DSS and Nebulosity, so I know what settings to use to get the best out of each image. For this image of M13 I just used the default settings.

Any comments on the focus? Is the focus okay or could it be better? Since this is my first attempt at DSO imaging, I don't know if I got it right or not. I focused on Arcturus with Canon's EOS utility which allows LiveView on the computer screen -- basically focused until the star image was the smallest diameter.

Focus looks perfect.
I have always just used the recommended settings in DSS. Click recommended and it usually steers you in the right direction. Only change settings if you're looking for a specific result.
