Having just flashed my firmware to 5CE1 on my LX-90 I was glad it was finally clear out tonight. When the scope started to do the automatic alignment it found level then went looking for North. It kept going right past and went in a full circle, never finding north. I thought great, bad firmware code. So I switched out the handbox with an older one and tried again, it still can't find north. So should I assume that my LNT module has gone bad? I did replace the battery but no change. I unplugged the LNT and did a manual alignment without any difficulty.

It's for the 497EP handboxes. So far it seems to work at least at well as the 5BE2. But I have only used one night so far.

Anyway to go back to 5BE2? That's what I would do. Then I would wait at least 8 months before attempting another firmware update. Just in case the "newer" releases introduce more bugs. I believe you can get 5BE2 here:
http://www.meade.com/support/auto.html about half way down the page. Notice that a new updater software has also been released ver 5.9

As stated in my original post I tried my old model 497 HB and still couldn't find north. The funny thing is by leveling and pointing the scope manually my alignment stars are a lot closer than when the LNT was working. On a side note the new firmware seems fine. I have been tracking Altair for about 45 minutes and it has been pretty centered in my 20mm eyepiece. And GOTO's have been great. Guess it was just coincidence that my LNT module died.

BUT the 59xx firmware has NUMEROUS known issues. Like it cannot find planets for example, and many other issues. The new Autostar Updater software (version 5.9, and ver.5BE2 firmware corrects many of these issues with the new hand controller.
As mentioned before 5BE2 will NOT work in the older 497 controller.

I removed the LNT module last spring and have done fine without it. A few days ago I updated the firmware on my 497EP from 5BE2 to 5CE1 and the go-tos have been spot on.
