Hello! I'm new to the community and this is my first post with a question. I will obtain an LX50 shortly and I ran across a Magellan I system for sale. Will the Magellan I work ok with the LX50? I read the Magellan I manual online and it doesn't really specify, so any help would be appreciated. I know the Magellan II was advertised to work with the LX50, but no info on the Magellan I. Thanks in advance!

It will work IF you have the proper encoder mounting hardware. It would not be plug and play like the Mag II AFAIK...

Thanks! I do believe the Magellan 1 I saw for sale comes with the required hardware. Cheers

IMHO you are taking a gamble. The Magellan II on the LX50 was not very good at accuracy, and it was designed from the get go for the LX50. I struggled with mine for years until I deforked the OTA and place it on an LX200GPS mount.

I upgraded my 8" LX-10 with a LX-50 fork mount. I was able to adapt the Magellan I to the LX-50 with some modifications. It is not a bolt up installation, more of a ATM project. I was even able to use one of the Magellan I plastic covers to protect the exposed dec gears on the LX-50. It all fit in the mounts castings, only exposed part is the wiring. Lynn

Thanks Matthew and Lynn! After that did it work OK? Was the accuracy reasonable? After reading the Magellan I manual, it would appear that it's compatible, but there were no installation instructions on the Meade website to be certain.

The LX-50 I bought came with the Mag 1 installed but I could never get it to work. I bought a Mag 2 from Meade & installed it. Unlike Matthew my works very well. If you end up buying it I still have the Mag 1 parts so if your missing anything I might have it just let me know.

FWIW,
I have a M1 and have used it with various scopes over the years.
What I have found is that if the encoders are directly mounted to the scope versus using the " mount hardware gears" the accuracy is good and consistent.
By good I means that in a 6" F5 or 8"F5.6 with a 17mm TV the object ends up in the FOV on just about every search. When its not in the FOV is just barely outside of it. Considering the DB and ease of use I think the M1 is underated.
Before you give up on using the M1 give it try.

Using the Magellan in the alt/az mode seems to increase it accuracy. Believe it or not this works when it is mounted on the fork mount and then mounted on the wedge at the proper latitude. When you set it up this way the Magellan is operating like it is setting at the pole. Lynn

Wow, thank you all for the great responses! Sounds like it's definitely doable. Now, just waiting for the scope to arrive... Cheers, Allan
