Basically.... the "live" forums only contain THREADS that were started on or after 1/1/2008... there is now a "Forums Archive" link where our users can access threads started before 1/1/2008. The "Forums Archive" only allows searching and browsing... you cannot login, respond, or start new threads.
Drastic change for some of you here in the binocular forum. For instance the very old thread Classic Binoculars, with hundreds of posts and 50,000+ reads, because the thread ws started years ago, is now archived. No longer accessible to post in.
Also most of the links in the Best Of threads are now cut. That may change, but I'm not sure.
Also all the Minireviews to old binocular reviews prior to 1/1/08 are now cut.
I'll keep you posted if hear any of the links access will change.
BUT one thingfor certain will not change. All old posts have been archived and are now only searchable in the archives forum.

VERY sad news .
In my opinion , this is hefty price to pay to reduce the occasional slowdowns of the site .

A shame as I have little to contribute to on this site other than the most popular thread.

Hmmm. The site still seems pretty poky to me, although on occasion in the past there'd be times I'd just give up and return to the site later in the day. Maybe those really sloooowwwww periods will be much less frequent, or gone entirely.

Well, other than the fact that civilization as we know it has been irreversibly changed, I think we'll muddle through somehow.

I may be thick, but where is the 'Archives Forum'. I've scanned the Forums twice now and must be missing it. I do not understand why the very lengthy threads could not have been split into two parts as you see on other forums.

Hi Folks!
Reading this thread, I have a couple of points to share.
Brentwood, here is a link to the Forum Archive - http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbarchive/ubbthreads.php
As for the popular "Vintage Binocular Discussion Thread", a new thread could always be posted to continue the discussion. We could link the old thread to the new thread in the first post, to provide an easy access point to the older discussion posts. I do this in the Classics forum with our "eBay and Craigslist Scopes" thread - it gets about 15 or 20 pages long and it becomes slow to load. So I lock it and restart it with a new one that contains a link to the old one. This could be done with the vintage binocular thread. I do admit that I enjoyed reading about the various old/antique binoculars that are still in use and it was nice to have all of those corralled under one thread.
If this archiving process makes CN run faster and more reliably, then I am all for it. There will surely be some kinks to work out in the transition - like the dead links to older threads. These will have to be flagged and fixed as we run across them.
Best regards and clear skies,
MikeG

Thanks for providing the link. I was thinking that I'd have to find this post every time I wanted to go in there, but then I see that the 'Archives Thread' is listed in the 'header line?' above. I did go into Vintage... Part one, but does it only go up to Sep 10?

Well, I tried to access some binocular reviews in the archives section, and got a "We Cannot Proceed" message, for several different topics........

A real shame! I propose to create, main index, a new area dedicated to collectors of vintage binoculars.
In this way, but we will have a short topic passionate collectors we find our messages grouped.

Hi,
Its easy to get the links in the Best of Threads back. For instance an old review of the Fujinon 10x50 was at:
http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1514854/Main/1512008#Post1514854
To get the review now, just change "ubbthreads" in the above link to "ubbarchive", and then it works!:

So now we just need some script that goes through the best of threads and changes the retired links but leaves the good ones as is, or else automatically redirects you to the archive for the bad links. Is this possible?
