Re: Rebuild/Upgrade of my old 10" f4.66 newtonian OTA new [Re: Ian Robinson]

UPDATE : ....

The ProtoStar Self Adhesive Flock has kept on sticking on , and only needed a few bits / seams reinforced with craft glue , as well as preemptive gluing of the flock at the ends of the tube.

Installed the secondary and collimated it with my old AstroSystems Cheshire - Sighttube .... fiddlly job with the AstroSystems secondary holder ---- allen screws are a regular pain in the butt and super fiddlely ....

(Bob's knobs might get an email).

Once I was convinced I had the secondary properly lined up with the focusor and centred in the tube and correctly collimated ??? (MAYBE) ??? the next job was installation of the mirror in my new modded Orion Optical (UK) mirror cell .... discovered the new nylon M6 pancake head bolts were too long .... a quick trim with the Dremei and I spent a bit of time making sure the mirror was centred properly before installing the mirror and cell in the tube....

More careful centring .... using the feeler part of the vernier calipers to make sure the mirror and cell was properly centred in the tube and then came the collimation of the OTA....

First tried a rough collimation with the Cheshire .... a regular pain in the butt .... too hot in the garage to be continuously moving from one of the tube to the other so after getting more and more fustrated with the chesire rough collimation (NO MIRROR DOT) I abandoned use of the collimator and deployed the AstroSystems LaserBeam .

See my thread "dumb questions".

I think the mirrors are now collimated and aligned and centred as good as I can get them .... M-A-Y-B-E .... ????

Next task , assuming I've not stuffed up the collimation / alignment and centring of the mirrors , is to break out the 40D - EsyGuider - Coma Corrector and check I can get good star focus .... all I need a good cloudless night .

And to star test the OTA (eyepieces and ParaCorr) .... any suggestions ? high magnification best for this ???

You guessed it .... clouds rolled in overnight and all I can see in the sky today is grey stuff ....

Seems my collimation technique may be dodgey (see other thread (Dumb Questions) ....

Will do some more homework on collimating and see if I can sort this ....

Mirror and cell installed and centred .... took a bit of time as I was fastidious with the vernier callipers and made sure the mirror was centred within a small fraction of a mm , and the cell was also centred in the tube as close as I could manage.

Secondary installed and centred and aligned with the centreline of the focusor.

Fiddlely job .

Finally collimated .... still needed a bit of tweek (could see the laser image off to one side and down a fraction (< a few mm out) when observing it from the front of the OTA.

A few small tweeks on the mirror cell collimation bolts and it was returning to whense it came ....

Reassembled it this avo , lasercollimated it again.

Took advantage of the transmission of some laserbeam through the coating (beam visible at night on the back surface of the mirror, put a paper hole reinforcer on back surface of the mirror at the centre of the mirror's back face --- still waiting for my CatsEye spots to arrive).
Noted that the laser spot was dead centre in this ring when I believed the OTA was collimated. 86% reflectivity (standard Al + SiO2 == > 14% transmissity .... you don't need a spot on the front surface to centre the laser beam if you can see the diminished laserspot on the back face and you can see the centre of the back of the mirror (which I can).

This will do until I am ready to clean the mirrors (there are some finger marks on the edge of the primary , and some adhesive dust on the secondary).

Might knock up a Berry style dob rocker box for the OTA for those nights I don't want to muck about with polar alignment or cart the my Atlux out (weighs heaps , is a chore moving it about .... gotta get that ROR shed done .... SOON !!!!) for when I just to look and star hop.
My old rocker box went to the tip .... the old (standard plywood was very ordinary looking .... will use marine ply if I may an new rocker box).

First light this evening , was very pleased with the appearance of the stars at 100x at just on dark.

The old CG5 is not up to it , needs more counterweights , but was OK for finder alignment and initial star testing (using manual slo-mos .... RA was pretty jurky ! ! not good , didn't bother powering up the drives , didn't want to risk frying them).

Next task is to check I can reach focus with the Esyguider and 40D attached to the focusor.
Wasn't game with the CG5 RA lock being a bit dodgey and prone to slipping with just the 2x CG5 counterweights attached and at the end of the CW bar, had to really clamp it's RA lock HARD !!!! , this can't be good for the old CG5.

I don't plan on using the 1O" astrograph on the CG5. Will be put on my Atlux which may need some extra counterweighting ( I need to weigh the OTA with/without the camera and OAG and CC attached , and need to calculate my OTA CoG for proper DEC balancing in both cases ...

The Atlux came with one 3.5kg (7.71 lbs) and One 7kg (15.4 lb) counterweight standard kit - this may prove inadequate).

Nothing for it but take the Atlux down to garage once I am sure I have the right amount of counterweights , to properly test it on the GEM intended for it.

I've got it done.

The PVC tube made it heavier than I hoped , comes in at 20kg with the rings and finderscope attached.

21.5kg with the OAG and coma corrector from Lumicon + the 40D + the Orion SSAG added.

I now need 2 more counterweights for the Atlux , another 3.5kg and a 7kg wlll give me good torque balance about the RA pivot point.
21kg of counterweights in total.

I'm gonna grow big muscles moving the OTA and counterweights and Atlux and it's tripod about....

Seriously considering a quick upgrade to a CFC tube. (will likely deduce my OTA mass by 6-7kg depending on the wall thickness I settle on , if the costs of doing a CFC tube isn't too expensive to proceed.
