my soviet 6x24's back from OptRep. with the fungus gone the view is much better, sharper and way more contrast excellent wide view through these.
the fungus has stained the prisms in places where its etched into the glass but i cant see any detrimental effect when viewing through them they still perform really well.
the focus mechanism still feels cheap though like every other russian binocular i've used

first look through them made me smile excellent build quality, superb optics really wide fov and nicely sharp in the centre.
these apear to be coated with a bluish hue on the objective lenses but not the ep's?

front view of the ross stepruva's
focus was very stiff on this example... a tiny drop of balistol made them very loose! so will nead re greasing. optics are clean and they seem well collimated still.

ha, yes i think i have the bug! had it for several years though i wouldn't call my self a real collector. i usually have half a dozen pairs that i keep and use at any one time but generally seek out, buy and sell to fund my photography equipment.
10x50's are multi coated but im guessing they are early with the serial number dating them to about 1979.
just been going over them with an led torch looking for hidden nasties but they seem good, tiny bit of haze in the right ocular but nothing that you'de notice.
would like a clean example of the 7x50 next.
though the 8x30 is my favourite so far the 10x50 has jumped in at second place pushing the soviet 6x30's down to third!

The 6x24's third? I think out of these tree the Russians come first for me, followed by the 10x50s then the 8x30s.
Maybe your 6x24's are not as good as mine? Will be interesting to see how your new ones perform?

Just been bidding on a spares repair Delactis 8x40, only need a prism, they were out of alignment had a missing eyecup and shattered prism! Sold for £55!

your probably right, the 10x50's are new to me so maybe they'll slip down to third again. my only real gripe with the 6x24's is the focus. if i could find a pair with a smoother focus mechanism they'de be number 1. the focus is smooth if no pressure on the ep's but the slightest touch on them makes the focus jerky and heavy? they were serviced i just think they are crudely made... luck of the draw and all that. optically they are great despite the slight etching on the glass left by the fungus when cleaned.

you didnt win the Delactis 8x40's then?

did you see the pair of soviet 6x24's listed the other day?

The focus of many Soviet stuff is poor, my 6x24 is smooth but has a bit of backlash. I lost the Zeiss, I cant justify spending more than £30 on a scrap binocular although they are fantastic binoculars. I do have a good pair, but also a pair in the "to do" box in the loft awaiting patiently for one prism.

Nikko Orion 6x24 new [Re: Simon S]
      #4839743 - 10/02/11 04:42 PM Attachment (22 downloads)

Hi:

Picked up this pair of Nikko 6x24 Orion binoculars at the Swap Meet today for $10.

Overall, they appear in good condition. Grease is pretty stiff, but I am able to move the focus and eye separation. They're individual focus eyepieces, like my 7x50 Nippon Kogakus, and "made in occupied Japan" like the NKs.

The view is surprisingly wide, listed as 93° on the right side under "Orion 6x24mm".

There is a vertical misalignment, though, and the view is hazy, so I'll need to take them apart to align and clean the inside optical surfaces. Before I do that, I'd like some thoughts and possibly pointers to instructions on how to do it properly. I've never taken my binocular purchases apart, and up to this time figured I wouldn't do any alignments myself until I got a pair worth restoring that needed it. (The cheaper binos with alignment problems I was figuring on using for telescope finders). This has got to be that pair, right?

-Tim.

I've seen a number of these older bins with FOV numbers similar to the "93°" on this one. It seems that all of them would make more sense if one would add a decimal point to them, making this one actually 9.3° and one I saw last week 10.1° instead of 101°.

Any thoughts on this?

Tim before you adjust collimation see if the image shifts when the focus is adjusted. Both of mine had an issue with a cemented centre lens in the eyepiece. I love these little binoculars, fairly good optically.

Hi Simon:

I've played with them a bit now, and the image doesn't shift while focusing. I would assume that the displacement would rotate with focusing if the problem is in the eyepieces? The misalignment is always in the vertical direction with these.

-Tim.

In that case your right it's not the eyepieces. I think you will find the prism location also a bit suspect on these.

i got my other pair of soviet 6x24's yesterday, a little battered but much better mechanically than the others with a smoother focus, right side is beautifully clear right through but left side again has fungus on the prisms. not as bad as the other set i had though. already i can see despite the fungus they are a little better than the other set! i guess the other pair weren't as well polished optically or something? that or the fungus caused damage?
they are a little later dated i think 74? from the serial number, have a different case than the earlier set i had
im debating whether to get these sent off and professionally cleaned? last time it was optrep but i wasnt happy with the way they were collimated, they seem to have been done "just good enough" so trying Glasgow binocular repair this time.
its just a shame i couldnt have found a clean pair as they seem to be extremely well collimated seems a shame to mess with them? but they need doing.
i spoke with Douggie at Glasgow bino repair and explained how important these were to me and also just how much these sell for these days which suprised him! in the hope they'll spend the time getting them right. fine binoculars these! im hoping this set will go back up to number one in my favourites list!!!

I would have a serious think about having this restored. You might be better off waiting for a clear pair.
