If it were true I'd be packing a large box too! However, the catch as I understand it is that the warranty only applies to the post-WW II West German Zeiss binoculars and repairs won't be made if parts are no longer available.

No such luck Simon, a move with work means my usual avenues for collecting are no longer available very often, also carboot season is over...I did rationalise the collection over the summer at a few carboots and got some half decent prices I wouldn't have got even on you know where.

Re: Wanted: U.S. Army 6X30 EE model IPD Plate new [Re: potts34]
      #5012352 - 01/11/12 02:34 PM

I'm restoring a U.S. Army 6X30 EE model binocular but am missing the IPD plate. The plate is a little atypical because the markings are on the left side instead of the right. Any metal IPD plate about 21 mm in diameter with the hole in the middle and the 60 and 70 markings on the left side would do. Please send me a personal mail if you have one you could sell me. I've tried Surplus Shed but they don't have any.

I was, of course, speaking of instruments of older--but reasonable--vintage.

Those things used to make Cory and me "Fat, Dumb, and Happy."

I came out better on the split. Cory just got happy; I got to be both fat AND dumb!

Cheers,

BillC

Are any of these binos worth anything?

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s130/cuctu/IMG_4547-Binoculars.jpg

The top one has a cracked eyepiece.

I don't much like the Zooms - small FOV and not very clear.

The Coronations seem nice, but are badly out of alignment and have been dissasembled a million times. I have a post a couple clicks down where I'm trying to figure out what to do with them.

The Bushnells may well be OK. Other than that, nothing really.

I have a Zeiss 7x50B Binoculars made in West Germany. I want to clean the internal.

1. How to remove the top prism cover (the plates)? The 2 small screw on the left & the 2 small screw on the right removed already, but the plates still cannot remove.

2. Where to buy the rubber eyecups for the Zeiss 7x50B Binoculars? mine is broken

Anybody can help me?

Replacement eyecups for the Zeiss West 8 x 50B were available long after the model had been discontinued. This may also be the case for the 7 x 50B, which is still in use on British naval vessels, so contact Zeiss West.

Kern/Leica 8x30 new [Re: planetmalc]
      #5018279 - 01/15/12 03:25 AM Attachment (20 downloads)

Finally I won a Kern/Leica in a swiss auction marked, but way too expensive. Preaviously I have lost all auctions conserning this type of binocular on another major auction site, but just as I felt safe, bidding just 2 sec before running out, this strange site expanded the time with another 2 minutes, and this kept going on for about 4-5 times.
I should have been wise and cool to withdraw myself....instead I became determent and stupid, and finally everybody else gave up - leaving me with a used swiss binocular, for the amount of 330 Euro...226 gbp....346 usd
I have not yet received the bin.
Is there a general opinion about how bad..or exellent this swiss bin actually is, hence the pupularity it seem to have at the auction markets in Europe, or have I been fooled by my own greed :O(

Well Allan, I don't think you paid over the top for them.
They are supposed to be great, I hope you enjoy them.
Forget the cost otherwise they will taint your enjoyment.
And remember if you don't like them or feel guilty about the money you spend, you can always resell them for a good price.
Let us know how they perform please.

Thank you for your comforting words.
I was letting myself getting carried away last night, by my wish to finally have this bin.
Thank you

Here is Holger Merlitz's review of this binocular:
http://www.holgermerlitz.de/kern8x30.html
This is an interesting and no doubt well-made binocular and you paid a reasonable market price for it. If you wanted to re-sell you would probably get your money back and maybe even make a small profit. If possible, for best viewing, you should remove the laser filter if it has one. Enjoy. I look forward to hearing how it performs.

Thank you Frank... I am more relaxed about my money waste now.
Actually I was looking for one without Laser filter, of the same reason as you mention, Becourse I have read somewhere that it takes away about 10% of light from the glasses..Hope I am right about this one.
Holger Merlitz wonderful site is absolutely new to me. Wonderful reading, and solves a lot of questions that I have been asking myself over and over.

I had a good result today.
On Friday I won a pair of unusual Hilkinson binoculars and as the seller was only 25 miles from my home I opted to collect them today.
When I arrived, I was greeted my a living room full of around 30 pairs of binoculars. I thought I'd gone to heaven!
The seller was selling some of his collection and had a pile of binoculars that he said he was throwing away as the needed cleaning or were in a bad state. So my return journey was with the binocular I won, plus about another 8 pairs!
And the one bonus binocular is this fantastic Bushnell Custom with amazing optics. It is just about the best compact in my collection.

All of the Bushnell Custom Series are great binoculars and it seems like more people are becoming aware of their quality. I've noticed a marked increase in their selling price lately on ebay.

Simon,

It is a shame you are on the other side of the pond. I am about to sell a fairly large number of classic porros myself and I would certainly let you peruse that selection.
