Bensi, some more information for you;

according to my 1954 catalogue Magnivu
8x magnification
Effective aperture 30
Yards at 1000 -126
Angular field 7.3
Exit pupil 3.75mm
Relative brightness 19.6
Weight 21ozs
Height 4 1/2"

My earlier version (circa WW2)is heavier and does have leather covering, but by 1954 the 'handles' were now covered in vulcanised ebonite.

Also by 1954 six figure serial numbers were prevelant and up to approximately 231428.

An alliance for repairs and renovations? new [Re: Bensi]
      #3523694 - 12/27/09 09:54 AM

An alliance for repairs and renovations?

I wanted to propose among us that we are delighted to restore or recover old binoculars fame, a kind of alliance.

For example I have a 8x26 Goerz in good condition but that I keep only in order to cannibalize for repairs of other Goerz.
I also have a Bausch & Lomb 6x30 Military Stereo same purpose, and various other pieces of prisms and binoculars.

I repeat ... are binoculars and spare parts that I keep for my repairs ... but if used for a work of historical value and restoration, are willing to negotiate a sale or exchange of parts.

For example, I'm looking for a doublet front (and a prism) of a Zeiss 7x50 binoctem, as my binoculars have serious cracks on the lenses.
Despite the chip can still be seen well ... but I'm in love with these binoculars by Zeiss ... and I would fix it.
Otherwise, sooner or later I buy another and I keep this ... as spare parts.

Hello

Little Clean for Barr & Stroud 6x30 C.F.20 new [Re: Bensi]
      #3524319 - 12/27/09 04:34 PM Attachment (94 downloads)

Dear friends, I had informed a good buy for a Barr & Stroud sn 8171 in very good cosmetic condition, but with the veil light (haze), caused by air and moisture by the years, the prisms and lenses of binoculars.
Today I did a clean without having to disassemble and clean the prisms and are very pleased with the outcome.
Just now I made some tests also on the sky in the constellation of Orion.
A really good result ... beyond my hopes.

I also gave a look with binoculars San Giorgio SWA 8.5 x30 10 ° (170/1000) and I can guarantee a show incrediubile size and brightness.
I think these prisms of binoculars St. George, are truly unique
oversized.

I send you some pictures ... the B & S

Yes Simon,

The binocular comes with a bluish anti-reflective coating similar to Zeiss same period.
Although it should be a single layer as was done in the years 40-50.

Bensi,
I think those cute little San Giorgio 8.5X30s are the prettiest bino in your collection. I'd sure love to peer through one myself! (As you know, I'm a wide field nut!)

Surely it is one of the rarest binoculars in the world.
When I started my collection, I would not have thought that the most important and rare pieces, binoculars were two Italians, San Giorgio and even more "La Filotecnica" 6x30.
I am a great admirer of optical tecnologiae German and English, but the huge amount of binoculars distributed throughout the world, make it relatively easy to get your hands on a binocular Zeiss, Goerz, Dollond, Ross etc ... but it is extremely rare to see and hold between hands, a San Giorgio or Filotecnica-Salmoiraghi.

San Giorgio and Zeiss were the time of WW2, two companies working together.

An example is this fantastic binoculars(see photo) are enclosed a photo (the same binoculars were built by San Giorgio in the same way about specific Zeiss for the Royal Italian Navy), but curiously the tripod is a San Giorgio.

Three Great companies for a periscope ....WW1 [Re: Bensi]
      #3527273 - 12/29/09 08:53 AM Attachment (92 downloads)

Three great companies for a periscope from big gun of WW1.

The Italian seller sent me these photos of a small periscope cannon of WW1 (I hope to buy it).
... While you read about engraving the names of "The Filotecnica Salmoiraghi (seller), Brevetto Goerz(patented) and manufactured in the factory" San Giorgio in Genova Sestri.

The apotheosis of history collection optics and mechanics.

Old Zeiss binos [Re: Bensi]
      #3528632 - 12/29/09 10:42 PM Attachment (87 downloads)

Hi - picked these old Zeiss binos up from a local fleamarket recently. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify them, please. Am in the process of cleaning and adjusting... The views through the side I have cleaned are superb.

Markings on the right side:
MO 7652
12x40

Although the front elements are only about 30mm in diameter.

Andrew

What are the markings on the left side? If not "Zeiss Jena", a photo would be helpful.

Are you sure these are Zeiss? build looks quite French to me, though I could be wrong of course.
The only Zeiss 12x40 I have seen/heard of are the military DF12x 40(1912-1940) and the civilian Teleduz(1912-1919)and Telonar(1919-1935).
More pictures would be useful.

Hello,

That "MO 7652" looks like "MG 7652" to me. Whenever I read "MG," I think Ministère de Guerre and the French Army. However this is a center focus binocular, so I have doubts.

Happy collecting,
Arthur Pinewood

Your right Pinewood it does appear to say MG which would indicate the French War Ministry but this is usually outside of any logo and is usually added after the instrument is made, the serial number is also very low for Zeiss.

Im wondering if the prism plates have been swapped. They are clearly not 40mm objectives so maybe a binocular of various parts? Just a thought.
