Celestron CGE Pro Mount
      #3370140 - 10/04/09 07:47 AM

Has anybody bought this mount. I have been thinking of
getting tnis mount. It looks very butch for the cost, over
the regular CGE mount.

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,
I have one and I'm very happy with it. I'm not an imager (yet) but a visual observer. The mount handles heavy OTA's with no effort or problems. The class of mounts below it doesn't cut it with something as heavy as a Meade 14" SCT and AT111EDT for widefield viewing. For me it worked out of the box the only add-on I picked up are the ADM knobs for attaching the mount to the tripod (ADM does amazing work). Nice not to need to buy a polar scope as well, the Celestron rountines for polar alignment are amazing.
Not a steep learning curve (if you have owned a Celestron goto before it's simple). The NexRemote computer control software is included (not something you have to buy like some other mounts) and integrates well with the mount. For GPS I used one from an old CGE and it works fine. Nothing to fiddle with or hoops to jump through controller wise to make it work. The mount is pretty much plug and play not plug and pray.

Phil

Hay Phil thanks for your response. Hows the noise when
slewing. I have a Meade LXD-650 that is too noisy, and
too small for my future needs.

Thanks Dave

I've read it. There really is no comparable mount in it's price range (100 lb capacity / $5000). PE sounded high for this price range, though. It's real competitor is a used Tak NJP w tripod for around $5000 and those are going to be increasingly rare as time goes on, and you'd still have to buy the Tak Pocket PC HC for $600.

Regards,

Chuck

Hi Dave,
I don't find the noise to be that bad at all. It's not like the ASGT if that's what worries you ;-)
Mine gets used outside and it wouldn't bother the neighbours.
For the price there isn't anything you can purchase new in the same capacity range with tripod, even if you add another $1K more.

I have also vacillated about buying the new Pro Mount. I did see one assembled and it looked massive. I am becoming an older gent and have fears about the set up down the road as aging takes it's toll. How is the setup of the mount for one person?

It's a heavy mount, but then it's a mount designed to handle heavy equipment. I break it down into three parts and can set it up by myself. I have had back injuries in the past but can still manage it. Lifting the Meade 14 is the toughest part.
