Astrophotography website creation ???
      #3370669 - 10/04/09 01:03 PM

I have seen some really fine astrophotography websites, and need some recommendations for the software to create one.

My goals are to have Albums, a blog, something like a forum for discussions on the photos and processing, pages for articles and tutorials, and the ability to create password-protected individual pages for the schools and anyone commissioning me to obtain raw data for their use (NEO surveys for example)...

Please help and thanks a million!
Don

Most of what you want to do can be done through basic coding of the website, without purchasing commercial software. How much do you know about creating web pages/sites?

Don,
I am a web developer by trade and hobby. If you need anything created, I'd happily do it for free (or beer, if you're feeling generous ).

You can PM me if you like, and we can discuss what kind of host you want your site hosted at. Some Internet Service Providers offer a few megs to their subscribers for web sites, although most don't come with many features. You can find free ones online, or you can usually get a nice monthly fee of $9.99 for a large feature set (which is what i've done). My site was hosted at http://www.bakakenny.com/layouts/olive_green/index.cfm, however i mainly used it to share photographs with my family here in the USA while i lived in Japan for 8 years. Since then, i've cancelled the subscription (although if you google it, it might show up in cached mode).

I develop a lot of content in CFML (Coldfusion Markup Language), and make use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) & Javascript. I've made a few blogs and photo albums for friends who don't like the free ones online, and don't like to pay for the fancy ones...and most of the time, i incorporate some sort of 'upload' function into the administrator page so that you can do all of your image uploading without having to do any FTP into the web host's servers.

Anyway, PM me if you're interested - i find myself with a lot of extra time at work, and to be honest, this will make it look like i'm actually working when i have nothing else to do. Perception is everything! Haha!

Clear skies,

Neb

Hey guys,
Sorry it took so long to get back. Internet/DSL being installed at the house tomorrow. I Have very limited HTML skills from the 90s, and no Java or CSS experience. I am a visual guy, and I downloaded MS Expression Web 3 trial last night. the last time I mucked around with website creation I used Frontpage 2003, and have played with Dreamweaver MX Studio. I am trying to get together something simple for my private noprofit project that is developing lesson plans for basic astronomy and astrophotography for grades 7-12, providing planetary ap seminars for schools and clubs, a blog regarding activities, sections for articles, and possibly some type of interactive Q&A forum. Galleries of course. I use Photoshop CS4 for images. Just have a bit of an overwhelming challenge of how to do it without getting too complicated...

Hi Don,

I volunteered to build a web site for my local astronomy club and I am building it in Ning.com. Ning is free online community software that includes blogs, forums, photo gallery, membership management and much more.

Worth checking out.

Here are some other astronomy sites done in Ning.

Wordpress works great. If you want to have your own name for the site, i suggest buying space from bluehost.com They are really great, and you can link it up with the wordpress style of blogging.
