I need some mount advice
      #3372755 - 10/05/09 02:29 PM

I've been using my camera mount with my PST. It works ok with my spotting scope but not so good with the PST.

1st question is manual or tracking. Since my PST has sweet spots, is it better to get a manual mount so that I can move the sweet spot around or can I do the same thing with a tracking mount? I like to tune, then sweep the limb and surfaces to see what pops out, then retune a bit different and do it again. I don't know if that is possible with a tracking mount.

2nd question. What is a good affordable manually tracked mount to get for a PST? Would an Orion EQ-1 work well?

3rd question. What is a good affordable motor tracking mount to get for a PST?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Mike

I had my PST on an EQ-1 for a couple of years and was never really satisfied with it. The fixed eyepiece made for some uncomfortable viewing angles from time to time. Last Spring I picked up a Vixen PortaMount (alt-az) and love it. It's got clutchless slewing, nice slo-mo controls, and is light weight but stable. For longer tracking I recently built an equatorial platform (TL Systems kit) that goes under the PortaMount and that works really well.

Clear skies.

Steve,
Thanks for the information. I'll reseach a bit on the Vixen.

If I've got all day (at the weekend) I set up my PST on the LXD 75. It's great to be able to leave it and wait for gaps in the clouds knowing that the sun is roughly in the centre of the ep when you come back to it. Most driven EQ mounts will be ok with the PST for visual.

The camera tripod or alt-az work well for quick looks.
