APOD, Sept 29/09 -- Awesome! new
      #3367435 - 09/30/09 11:48 PM

The DEEP, wide field image of Orion's Belt/Sword shows the dusty molecular clouds and reflection nebulae in a way I've not seen before. You can really SEE the effects of the stellar winds in action. A short book could be written about this one picture alone!

Couldn't agree more - an amazing photo! A lot of time and effort went into that one. Glad you posted this - I would have missed the photo otherwise!

I follow APOD regularly — at least once a week to review what's been featured. Wonderful site and very educational. This image is fantastic.

FYI:

Two hitherto favorite, similar images of Orion's belt are available at Davide De Martin's www.skyfactory.org and Steve Cannistra's www.starrywonders.com. Both images are based on POSS2 image data. (In Cannistra's image, he used his own M42 image in the panorama for reasons explained in his caption. His image is also more extensive and includes M78. M42, the Horsehead/Flame Nebula and M78 are an exquisite diagonal from top right to bottom left. Nicely done.)

The nebulosity complex in the Orion Belt (De Martin)

An Orion Mosaic from POSS2 data (Cannistra)

De Martin's and Cannistra's images have also been featured at APOD.

Enjoy if you so choose!

Those are really fantastic astro images. You have to wonder how many attempts were made before perfecting them to such a high degree.

I've been visiting APOD since it first appeared in the mid-90's, back when the only graphical web browser around was NCSA's Mosaic.

Thanks for the links, Todd, very nice.

I actually think Rogelio's photo in the APOD is not very different from what he posted on our local observing list just a day after returning from the star party at which he got the image:

http://observers.org/tac.mailing.list/2009/Oct/0402.html

Here's another posting of his, explaining a bit of what took place:

http://observers.org/tac.mailing.list/2009/Oct/0447.html

The results Rogelio gets are astonishing...

The links provided don't work. I tried but failed to find them at www.observers.org.

Please fix.

Sorry, we rethreaded the archives on TAC after I posted the links... these should work:

Both the APOD and Rogelio's shot are really splendid. I noticed that the reflection nebula IC 426 looks pretty bright in both shots. Mark, I see from your astroblog that you've seen it in your 18" from Coe. I wonder if it'd be worth going after with more modest aperture (e.g., my 10") from really, really dark skies. Has anyone tried?
