Here are the results of my welding from the other evening. The casters are galvanized and the extension tubes are stainless steal. I will add lengths of straight from leg to leg to increase over all strength and stability and to get all the force off the stock center hub. This is my progress so far. Overall it added 4" to he overall height... not so bad.

Scott,
Nice work.
Do you move the whole unit around with the scope(s) mounted? If so it looks like that you'll be getting close to the top (bottom) of the garage door when it's open (he says from experience ).
Any plans for some threaded rods to lift the wheels off of the ground when everything is in position? It looks like it would be a piece of cake to build a plate with a nice threaded nut that would bolt up to the existing mounting plate for each caster. I was just thinking because you'll remove any potential play from the wheel bearings with the wheels off the ground.

THAT IS A GREAT IDEA (leveling rods)!!! I will do that for sure!!!! That can even help with level too and as you mentioned the bit of play that might be there!!!! !!!
When moving , yes all is moved together as the photo shows, but I move it from the switch position to a home position to get it's center of gravity as low as possible.
But what an idea you gave with the leveling rods!!!! WOOT WOOT!!!! I will post photos after the new idea is implemented!!!!!!

Scott,
I posted some modifications to a Scopebuggy a while ago. I think you might find the threaded rods used for leveling interesting - link. I got them at McMaster-Carr. The rods are stainless steel and the handles are simply epoxied onto the ends. Those larger handles really make a big difference with a heavy setup, I find smaller knobs just annoying, especially in the cold.
Threaded rods - link Handles - link
If I was in a position to do some welding I would have also removed the basic 3/8" nuts that came on the Scopebuggy and used a larger threaded nut or coupler like this. As it stands now the wing nuts you see in the picture do a very good job of locking down the leveling rods. The wing nuts with a big washer on the top side and the welded nuts are on the bottom of that black bar.

mc Thanks. That was a great idea you had on the SB. I like the handles; I was wonder how/where to get them. I'll be ordering so parts shortly once I get the actual design drawn up. Thanks again!
