Hi guys!
Seing these Meade kits over eBay with two DS motors, Autostar 497 hand controller I was thinking that would be nice to stick them on a home made mount. Let's suppose I want a good precise mount, especially for photography, and the mount has serious gearing like Byers makes, would one of those kits be good enough to keep up for good traking? Also the Go-To option looks pretty appealing. The motors seem to be made usually for DS, although I remeber I sow a kit with LX motors once. Does anyone have experience with one of those kits?

Ummmm........yeah, but it was 5 years or more ago. There used to be a Yahoo forum about it too. Try doing a Google of DS Mounts.

Alex,
Yahoo Roboscope group would be the best source for DS motor based modification.
Note that getting the output shaft for the little "DS" is not trivial. Also, carefully balance the mount is very important or the DS motor unit's internal Delrin plastic gears can be easily stripped.

Thanks for your posts. In the mean time I found some good sites about Autostar 497 adaptation for bouth Alt and EQ mounts. I conclude that for a heavier mount some LXD75 motors would be a much better choice cause they have more torque and are better built.

I've brought this subject about Meade Autostar controller cause it seems a very nice and afordable motoristion option, including Goto (and after the source above even GPS capabilities could be added). To bad it doesn't have an autogiding option included (from what I've learned) ....or it has but through PC control with the 505 cable kit?!...I'm lost here

Hi Alex:
Yea, the Autostar autoguides via a pc and a serial cable (can't remember the number). I've used the Meade DSI with my LXD-75 setup. The cable can also be used to download software and celestial object database updates.
I'm in the middle of one of the Autostar upgrades on my old home made mount myself. I've got posts here on cloudynights.
G'luck,
Michael
