I've never ever had another amateur astronomer intentionally sell me something defective without coming clean about it. WEll, always a 1st time!! This past Stellafane a 'nice guy' I just met sold me a UO 5mm eyepiece... he also generously 'threw in' a book as a gift'. I did NOT bring a scope to this convention this time, so I did not test it till I got home. For these few months with little observing time, I finally found out that the field lens has a chip on the edge! causing that 'black mark' I've been meaning to 'clean'!! UO says they cannot help me in replacing the triplet field lens! ... Anyone have any ideas? It appears to affect about 1/5 of the field ..thank God, only at the edge!
thanks for any help. Alexander Mallon

Something like this happened to me at NEAF- a respected long time seller lulled me into buying a vintage erfle ep that had great views in daylight but at night was fogged due to water damage. Completely useless for nighttime use. He buys stuff too- been thinking about returning the favor...

Sorry to hear you have a bad eyepiece. I think you are better to sell it listing the problem and get rid of it. We all know the risks of buying used. If you really wanted a HD you maybe better off ordering new. I have had my share of bad deals over the years and I think its best to just move on.

I've been to a few conventions and sold eyepieces. I always bring a telescope along so folks can try out what they want to buy. Wish others would do the same.

Thanks folks for the responses. I remebered someone who knows this fellow... Just spoke about the deal, he swears that this guy would never do such a thing ... Well, I got his email .. I'll keep ya'll posted. It would be a 'shocker' for this to happen intentionally at Stellafane.
... BTW, so sorry to hear of the bad experiences you've each had -ESPEC. the guy who sold a 'foggy' ep!!
best to all, alexander

when people complain about televue prices, they often forget that they service their eyepieces AND sell replacement elements.
the only thing i can think of is to post a wanted ad on astromart and CN and see if anyone has another UO 5mm eyepiece with some other element scratched or damaged.

You should try to contact the seller, I have had many, many transactions and rarely have I ever had a bad experience when I have complained. Give the seller a chance to make it right. I have bought and sold a few eyepieces myself that I never took the time to look through.

Ugh it's hopeless - get a new one. People whang down the retaining ring as if the lenses were made of iron.
