I use a Bhatinov mask with my SV102 scope and it works great. So I decided to buy another one from a vendor to use with my Orion ST-80. But when I tried the new one out tonight on the 80mm, I could not see the diffraction pattern at all It simply did not work. Is anyone else using a bhatinov mask with your 80 mm scope and is it working ok for you? Homebuilt or vendor bought? Thanks -- John

I used mine on my ED80 tonight. Were you on a bright star? You may need to increase your exposure time and/or adjust the stretch in the preview window to see it properly, but it should definitely work.

I was on Scheat (mag 2.44) in Pegasus. I varied the exposure times from 0.5sec to 1 sec which is what I use on my SV102. And I fiddled with the preview image trying to stretch it out but I could not ever clearly see the X shaped diffraction pattern with the central line in it like I can on my SV102...I'll give it another shot. I may have had something else out of whack...

If you're tracking is good, try doing a longer exposure like 10 seconds to see if it shows up then. Also, make sure your gain is turned up to full if you have a setting for that.

You may need to add an extention to reach focus!

Wow- didn't even think of that. That's probably the issue.

I myself have trouble with anything fainter than a first magnitude star. The brighter the star the better.

Thanks everyone. I'll try some of these ideas out but of course it's clouds and rain for the next few days...

We've had a rough several weeks here too. I snuck in some imaging last night, cloudy tonight for the LCROSS impact

You did not say what kind of setup you habve, but could I suggest you try it out during the day, and focus on a distant mountain or telephone pole just to be sure your scope can reach focus with your setup. Then mark your tube, or better yet, get an eyepiece and parfocalize it.
Then, at night, turn up your ISO, or gain, depeinding on what you are using, point to Vega, or Betelgeuse or something bright, and you should get something.
I use a BMask on my TV 85 all the time without problem. I even use it on my camera lenses (58mm opening!). So, the problem is not the size of the aperture.

Last Saturday night I used one at a friends house (on a ST80). We had it set for a 2 second exposure and on the Stars Altair & Vega, the defraction spikes where there. We had to adjust the Black & White slideres to display the spikes, but it does work.

OK. It sounds like I just need to try it again. But it has been raining like you would not believe here for days! So much for the cool and dry Octobers of yesteryear! And I was supposed to leave for the Peach State Star Gaze tomorrow, but the forecast for there is also heavy rain
