I notice that the specs for the Swift Audubon 8.5X44 say that they are waterproof, but reading reviews, it appears that they are not fogproof. It seems kind of odd that the manufacturer wouldn't purge them with dry nitrogen if they went to the trouble of sealing them.
How important is this? Are the inside optical surfaces stained if they become fogged? It seems like for fogging to occur, the binoculars would have to be cooled down very fast, such as when they are taken outside in winter. I am wondering what temperature differences might cause this to happen?

This is an excellent topic. I hope we see some good discussion.
100% waterproof and fogproof binoculars usually are the roof, individually focused porro, and internally focused porro. Many of the binoculars that are advertised as waterproof might be better described as water resistant.
I will leave the explanations to the technical experts. There is much to be said. I hope this becomes the hot thread of the weekend.
