Just curious if any of you with really big binoculars and high magnification EPs will attempt observation of the crater Cabeus impact near the Moon's south pole. (Would have to be from the western U.S.)

They would have be REALLY big binoculars. From what I understand, it would be visable in 10" or larger telescopes.

I dropped into the Lunar Observing Forum. Lots of threads and a really big one right at the top. Now that I know the scale involved, powers of 250x to 500x make sense. (The highest mag at which I've seen the Moon is 150x.) I've been meaning to test what I can resolve on the Moon at 20x ... well, some time ...
I guess the Lunar Observing Forum is gonna get real busy in a few hours!

I have a 28" and 20" telescope set up in my back yard right now, hoping to glimpse it. Plus, a pair of 100mm binoculars. I'll let you know, but right now the weather looks like it is going to hell! Typical!! Argh!

My favorite object on the moon as viewed in 25x100 binoculars is Rupes Recta, The Straight Wall.

I didn't see any impact with my 10" f15 Celestron Pacific at 250x. I luckily had a momentary clearing in the marine layer that started moving in around 3am.

I did not see any impact with my Orion 12" dob at 240X. So I doubt that anyone saw it with big binoculars. Kevin

Dave Mitsky has posted an LCROSS Live Update link in the Lunar Observing Forum. Latest update states "scientists do not know exactly what LCROSS saw." They've got something. So, let's stay tuned in. I've put that link in my favorites and will check in every now and then during the day.
I think Ed Z has presented a interesting challenge with Rupes Recta. Too bad, the fog's back. Right now, I probably have a better chance of spotting Tiger Woods across the boulevard during the Presidents Cup.

The result seems strange. Was there no plume? And why no flash? Only a thermal signature. I wonder if something went wrong.

We do need to remember the Centaur stage was empty and not really that heavy, it would not be good at getting payloads moving fast if it was. So I wasn't really expecting much but they sure hyped it up a lot...
My bigger surprise was having to rely on my iPhone for timing, I could not get WWV at that time of morning on any frequency with my shortwave.

The straight wall is definitely a favorite of mine with my 100mm BT at 25X.
