Hi all, I have a very simple question. My toa130S has serial number 09031 : does it mean that it's the number 31 for year 2009 ? Do you know how much of each scope they produce yearly ?
Kind regards,
François

François,
That is exactly what the serial number means - the year in the first two digits and the scope number in the last three. Don't know how many they produce each year.

This might be a stupid question, but is true for all Takahashi scopes?

You can learn more here by accident than most places by design.

Hi Dan,
Nice to know this ! But I thought that the serail numbers were specific to each model, no ? I hope you enjoy your fsq106 as much as I enjoy my toa : terrific scope !

I don't know if this has ever been specifically addressed. It is conceivable that all mounts and scopes get consecutive serial numbers based upon the chronology of their completion - a EM11 could be 09422 followed by a TOA30 with 09423, followed by an FSQ106 with 09424, etc. However it is probably more realistic to think that there may be multiple 09422's, etc. as the ID plate on the scope which has the serial number further identifies the scope or the mount specifically - TSA 102, TSA 120, EM 200, etc.
One way to find out would be to ask, and it may be hard to get an answer, the other way would be to see if anyone has the same serial number for a given year, just a different product; this would prove that serial numbers are product specific. I will get the ball rolling - my two TAK serial numbers are:
07065 for my 2007 TSA 102, and 03149 for my 2003 EM 10 mount.
Likely too that rarer items will always have lower serial numbers as fewer of them are produced. Probably unlikely that you would ever see a high number for any of the larger mounts (EM400, EM500, etc.) as fewer are produced, unless of course there is just one chronology of serial numbers and they are not product specific.

I ordered my TOA-130S from Takahashi Europe (I live in Greece) early January 2009 and received it 3 weeks later. The scope's serial number is #08097# which means that it was made during 2008 and sold the first month of the next year. Judging by my case I assume that Takahashi makes less than 100 TOA-130S per year, which is quite normal, since these scopes are not meant to be made in huge quantities.

There is an exception of sorts when it comes to Takahashi serial numbers. It's the serial numbers on scopes and mounts made in the 1980's; these are only four-digit serial numbers. The first digit is the year in that decade and the 8 has to be added. For instance: I have had an FC-76 and two EM-100's with serial #'s 5249, 6297 and 9002 and these would have been made in 1985, 1986 and 1989 respectively. I guess Takahashi wasn't thinking past 1989 in those days.
