Unless it's slewing in one of the higher speeds the thing is very quite. I had to look in the EP to be sure it was moving, it was. But there was absolutely no sound to indicate it.

"Heavy...." yes the head is very heavy... but the last night I had mine out, I kicked one of the tripod legs at 2 in the morning and thought "Whoops.. there goes my alignment" but not so. I re-slewed the scope to see how far it was off and it had barely moved...with my imaging setup, CWs and the weight of the mount/tripod, it must be close to 100 lbs. So for if you're thinking of carrying a fully loaded CGEM in and out without breaking it down, better get a buggy...

Bart, Congratulations and take your time with the manual!! There's a lot of good info in there and you will be referencing it a bit for a while.
I got my CGEM back in May and it was cloudy and foggy through July, partially in August, and now with a new AT8RC it is starting to clear up a bit. Over the months I've been able to get the mount out a few times and love it!! Great step up from my CG5...
Enjoy.

My new CGEM arrived this past Monday. I had very little time to work with it in the house since I went away for two past days. My initial impressions so far are very positive. The unit arrived very well packed and protected. I set up the new mount and immediately replaced all the plastic knobs with my new aluminum celestron orange anodized replacement knobs and proceeded to setup the new mount. All said it took me all of about 10-15 minutes to setup and changed out the knobs. I then proceeded to fire it up and try out the electronics and test the motors and handcontrol menu. Once again it fired up flawlessly and was very smooth in operation. Comparing noise on the fastest motor setting to my 12" Lx-200 gps it is definetly at least twice as quiet if not more on the high drive setting.

I thought the mount was very solidly built and look forward to my new 800HD ota to arrive very soon. I will post back more results in future.

I will be running the new setup with my refractor mounted ontop and autoguiding with the orion autoguider.

So do you guys think a CGEM can handle my Mewlon 250? It weighs 30 lbs with diagonal and my 35mm Panoptic. My Sphinx SXW isn't up to the task (I just had it gone over and the Dec motor replaced, so I'm not about to put the Mewlon on it again ...)

Thanks,

Chuck
