Thanks for starting and responding to this thread .... very, very helpful.
I may have missed it but I did not notice Eta Orionis in the lists. I find this frustratingly difficult to split with my 4" refractor ... yet others tell me that it should be fairly easy with a 4"!!! I would estimate that I manage to confidently split Eta Orionis only every 6-8 attempts, even when I would rate seeing as reasonable/good. I recently purchased a CPC-11 and so far have only tried to split it once ... with success (what!) ... but then seeing was only average at best.
I would appreciate any observing clues and comment about splitting Eta Orionis.

I'm really glad you mentioned this last one, South 437. I have been intrigued with this double ever since I made a crude 10-inch SCT photo that showed this wide (39.4") equal mag (8th mag) double plus the very close star next to the western star, which upon close examination of very good amateur images is seen to be double also. The western component of South 437 is shown as Bu536 CD on Cartes du Ciel at 16.5". I've never managed to see this companion, maybe because it has a 4mag difference (8.1-12.1m). Has anyone seen this one? The AB component supposedly is only 0.9" sep. and similar mags (8.1/9.4m). The Cartes du Ciel chart is confusing. Would appreciate PM on this if anyone can clarify (it is kind of abtruse for the forum, probably).

ES244A & B
Sky and Tel was kind enough to run a small quip on me in their magaezine for my bringing this to the attention of them. It was also referred to as the baseball diamond cluster .
Low power in medium aperture lends it an almost glittery planetary look, med to hifger mags reveal the diamond, a gleaming home plate, a runner who overshot first base, and batters waiting to get on deck.
Cool actually... in the belly of cygnus. Caught it while I was scanning at 70x with my 8" reflector.

I have different ones based on the season, but I have to say my all-time favorite is Albeiro. The only reason is in the summer, fall, and very early winter I always like to end an observing session on it, and usually at a low power to show-off its color contrast.

I "discovered" h3945 a month or two ago, and think it's interesting that this double doesn't have a reference in the common double catalogs. I don't see how a double this beautiful can fly under the radar...so to speak.

Gamma Andromedae through my 8" for its difficulty, and beauty in merged spurious discs of different color at a mere .5 arc sec seperation. 95 Herculi for color. 66 Cygni for those warm colors. Epsilon Lyra of course for obvious reasons. Es244 a@b - a fantastic multiple in a grouping smaller than the apparent face of Jupiter.
Wow - uts a tough list to put a lid on...

It really depends on what telescope I'm using. Here are a few examples:
Questar 3.5 - gamma andromedae - deep yellow, blue
Tak TSA 102 - alpha canes venaticorum - pure white, olive
10" newtonian - delta cygni - white, rose WZ cassiopeia - red, blue

My top 5, and their colors as I see them, would be these:
Gamma Andromedae (yellow/greenish)
Rasalgethi (orange/greenish)
Castor (silver/silver)
95 Herculis (grape green/lemon yellow)
Epsilon Bootis (yellow/indigo blue)
I can't say I DISLIKED any of the others!!

I thought long and hard before posting this and the positives outweigh the negatives. Here is my unqualified, first-blush, off-the-top-of-my-head list (no particular order, I'm NOT a detail-oriented guy):

How about you? What's on YOUR list?

Izar, Epsilon Bootes, is my favorite. It is hard to split in my 10 inch SCT unless the seeing is steady.
I once spent and entire evening in July of 1999 exploring all of the double star systems in Bootes. I was learning to use my setting circles at the time and it was a lot of fun...but now I use a GOTo and TheSky software to point to stars...it is much easier to do.

Friday morning after the non lunar impact I went for Iota Cass and Beta Mon. This was an opportunity to compare both of these showpiece triples. Both are stunning but I really like the delicate structure of Iota. Make that my favorite triple!
