Coast Instrument Trecker Scope
      #3385651 - 10/12/09 04:26 PM Attachment (28 downloads)

My father-in-law found an old telescope in a garage sale and bought it. It is a Coast Instrument "Trecker Scope" Model: 8S, Serial #: 174. Attached is a photo of it. It seems to be in "fair" shape. I was wondering if you could tell me about the telescope, how much it might be worth, and whether someone might be interested in buying such a telescope.

Welcome to CN. Youv'e come to the right place. Your going to get alot of knowledge coming your way pretty soon from the pros here. Nice looking scope, lets see a pic of the label if there is one.

One of these days I'll try a Refractor better than my 90mm finderscope

There are a few people on here who have Trecker Scopes. If you're really interested in selling it, you might want to post in the "shop and swap" forum, or post an ad in the classifieds.

Where are you located? Reason I ask is that shipping often kills otherwise great deals (I'm in Los Angeles, hint, hint!).

Albert, Thanks, both for the welcome and the comment on the telescope. Here's a pic of the nameplate.

Tim, thanks for the interest. I want to find out more about the scope before I decide if I want to sell. If I lived in an area with less light pollution, I wouldn't even consider selling. Unfortunately I live in a suburb of Oklahoma City which also makes it expensive to ship just about anywhere.

Congratulations! You have a nice, collectible scope. Think of it as a '56 Chevy....old school, built like a tank, classic design......

They were made for around five years back in the '50s IIRC. It's a quality instrument and a great project for somebody who's into it (and boy, you came to the right place!!). It's probably not the best beginner or "grab'n'go" telescope.

As for dollar value, that's hugely dependent on its actual condition, and how badly somebody wants it. It probably wouldn't sell for thousands, but it's a good-quality classic instrument, that people would be interested in.

We'd all be interested in seeing see more photos!

Cheers,

Jim

No worries! What you have there is potentially a terrific planetary scope - and planets are bright enough that you need not worry about light pollution.

Definitely give it a go. Well collimated, you probably will quickly get hooked!
