getting a sky window? new
      #3363155 - 09/29/09 05:31 AM

Hello,

I suffer some back pain and looking more than 30mins at zenith is impossible for me. So I have found that sky window sold by tricomachine.com. I want to buy it, and I emailed a question whether it is in stock and if they have no problems sending to Europe. A week passed and I didn't get an answer.... So I started to worry that they went out of business or something.

So I wanted to ask if anyone here bought recently sky window, what was the customer support experience, or maybe there is some alternative product that I could purchase.

thanks in advance for your help
Janek Kozicki

Hi Janet,

I called Trico for you and they found your email so a reaponse is on the way. Cheaper to call from the States than from Poland.

I use side by side, collimated SW's at 9 x 60 and 20 x 60. Almost Heaven as we say in West Virginia!

Be sure to buy the Gold mirror even if you do not plan to use higher magnification at this time. You will eventually use higher magnification anyway. It does make a difference.

When using any optical surface exposed to the sky, you might want to consider adding a heat source to combat dew and frost. Especially if you like to observe for longer periods than about one hour. Given the large surface area and--unless you add one--lack of dew shielding, I would guess that you might need to deliver around 5 watts, and possibly more, directly to the underside of the mirror.

Greetings,

For some reason, dew has not been a problem even when my other scopes are out and require dew heaters. However, dew heaters are at hand for the objective/eyepiece end as well as the mirror should the need arise.

I did place an order for a Sky Window a few weeks back and just got word today that the order is on the way. (I was getting a bit antsy/nervous) The explanation for the delay was that they were waiting for a new inventory of "Gold" mirrors. They did apologize for the slow shipment...

question for boydd: side by side, collimated sky windows? Can you elaborate a bit on this?

thanks for any info,

scott thompson

Thanks boydd for contacting them. I got an email from them. And I was just about to finalize my order, when I saw that shipping to Europe costs 330 USD! Same price as sky window itself I was prepared to pay 370 USD for the equipment, but not twice the price, 700 USD for sky window+shipment. Now I'm stuck.

Anybody from Europe wants to buy it too? We could share the shipment cost....

I've checked the price in UPS Poland for "UPS Worldwide Expedited", and below 1kg (2.2 lbs) it is only $180, for 3kg (6.6 lbs) it is $275. Now I wonder what's the weight of package.

I've sent to tricomachine email asking if there is some way to reduce the shipment fee (e.g. multiple orders to Europe). Now I'm waiting for answer.

best regards

Parhaps you can order just the mirror in the EU and make a mount for it yourself saving on the freight?

Janek, have you thought about making a parallelogram mount? With a lounge chair, it could be perfectly comfortable for viewing at zenith? Or is there some other constraint that it doesn't meet?

Well, I have a 5kg pick-up limit. It's not a hard limit, sometimes I pick up my 8kg daughter. Then it hurts a bit. So I prefer to not drag a lounge chair around.

Currently I'm trying to convince an astro shop http://teleskopy.pl/ to buy multiple sky windows to save on shipping, then sell me just one of them. They are selling to whole Europe in fact, with UPS. So if any of you from Europe wants a sky window - this might help convincing them to buy several of them.

best regards

PS: I made that part bold, so that those who glance without reading might notice it and let me know that they might be interested

I have sent many items to Poland. Ask that it be shipped by US Post Express Mail International. Cost is usually about $10/kg up to 30kg max.

cheers,
Rick

Rick is right, do not use UPS, its a robbery for shippments outside USA. Try USPS, international shippments are much cheaper and equally reliable.
