CGE Polar Alignment Scope new
      #3384083 - 10/11/09 05:07 PM

I'm trying to find information about a polar alignment scope for the CGE mount. Does Celestron have one? I can't find anything on their web site.

Tom,

There was one, but I'm not sure if it's still available, I haven't seen it advertised for quite a while. The s/w based Polar Alignment Routine has effectively removed any need for the scope. In the latest levels of HC firmware this is called the All Star Polar Alignment Routine.

Hey Tom...what Mark said. Save your money. The CGE polar alignment routine, even the older one, is good. If you have the new firmware, it's really good.

Does the new polar alignment routine actually help you achieve good polar alignment or does it just compensate for the error?

Good PA, it takes you through the basic steps to move the mount for an accurate PA.

Use a reticule eyepiece and longer handled hex wrenches (for more leverage and accuracy) and you can get a very accurate PA. Perhaps it's biggest benefit though is that the "All Star" version allows you to use a wide variety of stars to achieve a good PA rather than just Polaris.

When I had my CGE, it was before the new PA routine was available. What I did was to do 2 iterations of the routine. It got the PA very close. I don't know if the new routine would be aided by doing 2 iterations, but since it doesn't take that long, why not?

Usually in any equatorial mount first orientate mechanically the mount and then allign it with the stars... Otherwise, in the CGE first is done the "logical" part (allignmetn) and then the mount give the instructions to you to reorientate mechanically the mount to be perfectly oriented.

1.- You place the mount roughtly oriented towards the north (acepts almost 15º!!! of error)
2.- Alignemt of the mount with 2 stars plus 4 of calibration (using the hand control)
3.-read the polar orientation error. The hand control gives the error in degrees respect to the North pole in AZ and elevation.
4.-follow the protocole for mount orientarion that gives the Hand control: goto a star(better , if select a star near the celestial equator and the meridiane) and syncronize with that star. Then the mount move the tube toward the place where such star should be if the mount is perfectly oriented to North pole. Then leave the Hand control, and mechanically move the mount in elevation and azimut using the bolts or knobs until the star is in the very center od the field of view. Finish pressing enter. Now the mount is oriented North...

Google Celestron CE-94222.

They are availble here and there for about $180 brand new.

Thanks everyone, that is good to hear. I can scratch that item off my list.
