mirror coating info new
      #3384953 - 10/12/09 08:32 AM

Good morningall: hey dumb question...I was searching the internet for mirror coatng services.
I found Spectrum, who kindly have a very well done web page complte with pricing and more info thn I needed to know..lol.
I found Majestic who say very little on theyre web page that told me anything anyways.
And Clausng's who have a fairly extensive web page when it come to fancy coating but litle about the aluminum coatings and dont have a pricing page either.

Spectrum lists both a 12.5 and a 14.5 inch mirrors from 125.00 to 190 fior the 12.5 and 160.00 to 235 for the 14.5 depending on reflectivity you ask for.
Majestic simply says from 75.00 ? Ive emailed them for a price on a 13. inch.
And Clausing doesnt give a price at all, Ive contacted thme also for a price.

My questions are this: Are there other coaters out there just as good but who dont run a web page???
Are there any comments about any of the above I should read?
And honestly would I notice the differance between 91 percent and 95 percent???
Also Im sure most of you have watched the videos on the Spectrum web site???
http://www.spectrum-coatings.com/Movies/Adhesion%20Video%20FLV%20Movie.htm

Any thoughts .

And lastly aby advise ,suggestions etc would all be appreciated.

You would not notice a difference at the eyepiece between 91% and 95%. More coating options: Nova, OWL

I'm quite sure there are but only go for a local fellow or someone recommended by a good friend.
I really like the method Spectrum suggests for packing a mirror and used it for my 16" when I sent it to them.
No difference visualy.

Try to get recommondations from folks that have used a coater recently to get a better feel for the quality of work the shop is putting out NOW. Helps to call or email the coater to see what the turn around time is for the time frame you want to use them. Sometimes it's rather fast and other times it's weeks. You may very well be willing to wait weeks and if you know up front it makes the waiting a bit easier.

My first coating ever was Pancro Mirrors out of Los Angeles (I think) in 1968. That coating is still on my first home-made 8" mirror. It's getting pretty bad, but it still works.

I had my 16" home-made mirror coated with an enhanced coating by EMF out of New York in 1987 but a cat sprayed on it and I eventually had to get it redone in the 90's. The last coating I got was from Newport Glass Works out of Calee'fornia. Still have it on my 16" but that was in the mid-90's so I'm not sure if they still do coatings.

Pancro is out of business as far as I know.

Evaporated Metal Films is still be in business. They used to list prices but that was years ago. Now they just have a quote page. Is that a trend with coating services now? I don't know.

Newport Glass Works still does coatings but as with the others, does not list prices.

Good luck on your search.

You may want to look into Optics Wave Laboratories (O.W.L.) I have seen posts by that they were very helpful and reasonable.

Hmmmmmm more to think on Clausing quoted 185.00 plus shipping and Insurance, not sure what that will total up to.

Majestic Quoted 150.00 without insurance and shipping also.

Both have a 1 week turnaround time.I never thought to ask Spectrum about shipping ,handling or turnaround time, man I dense.
Ill check out those other coaters, thanks Guys.

Optical Mechanics just a coated a 16" for us and did a great job. They also sent us null knife edge/ronchi grams for free.

It is an IAD process versus a "traditional" evaporative process.
