Greetings! Although I have a good feeling about getting the Fujinon 16X70's, my current research is focused on the Vixen 36x80's. I read one article from CN (from several years ago), but haven't found anything else. Thanks to this forum, I know about the quality of the 16X70's. It seems from my limited information read that for a few hundred more, the 36X80's will give me the option of using various size (quality) lenses, even if they are several hundred $ a pair. Will the quality be similar to the Fujinons? Are there any cons?
I was planning on using the "UniMount Light" parallelogram mount, from Universal Astronomical, including the tripod recommended by Larry. If I get the 36X80's, would it be better to get a heavier mount and tripod, due to the extra 7 pounds? This would also be a few hundred $ more; however, my main concern is the quality and knowing that I have something that functions correctly. I have to save $ for what ever I purchase. It's only the extra time waiting!
One last item: I do have a concern about the 16X70's limited eye relief, that several of you commented about. At 64, I do wear glasses and have astigmatism. Also, with medications, who knows exactly how clear my vision will be! Also, I'm in the L.A. area; however, I WILL go to dark sites! Thanks to the CN members for all of their help and knowledge. I continue learning from you, about various topics, daily!

I have a Vixen 36x80 BT 80 mounted on a Bogen 3046 & 501 head .My EPs are Burgess TMB,s & WA,s, Orion Sirrus & Garretts & some Vixens none of which cost much more than $100 a pair & some even less . I use the same EPs in a Garrett 100 45 also. Vixens & Garretts dont get used a lot since ive obtained som Mia Saturn 2s & Exceeds which are lighter & more managable for a 71 yr old. Brian.

Rich, it would be worthwhile to find a vendor with a liberal return policy if you can't try the Fujinon 16x70s personally first. The eye relief may be a deal breaker for an eyeglass wearer, depending on variables such as your prescription, eyeglass design and facial features. Their eye relief certainly isn't adequate for me and my eyeglasses. The Unimount is a great match for the Fujinons.
I have no experience with the Vixens, but I do have experience with 45° ocular binoculars and feel you can get comfortable views using a sturdy tripod and head for mounting. A p-gram is much more useful (if not necessary) with straight through design binoculars.
The Vixen’s 1.1° FOV at 36x seems to be very narrow for that magnification; it appears the provided ortho eyepieces only have a 40° apparent field of view. As a comparison, my 100mm Miyauchi 45° binoculars provide a 2° FOV at 33x with 66° AFOV eyepieces. The Vixen has a built-in barlow to extend the focal length up to 900mm, so low power wide field views won’t be available, as far as I can tell.
Here's the only review of the Vixen I could find: Vixen BT-80M-A showdown with Miyauchi 100 & Miya 71
Best regards,
Rich V
