New Discussion "Classic & Historical Binoculars"?
      #3386763 - 10/13/09 08:32 AM

I suggest to the moderator and professor EDZ.
Could You create a new thread called "Classic & Historical Binoculars" in the "Equipment Discussion" index?
The Forum has a built in "Classic Telescope" but I do not think that looks good to most fans of binoculars Vintage.
You could create? What do you think?

Bye
Marco

We are not adding new forums at this time. Sorry.

I will put this request up to the administration. However this is such a small subset of forum participants that it is not a likley choice to expand to a full forum.

Why not just rename 'Classic Telescopes'- 'Classic Instruments'?

FWIW, discussions of "classic" optics is always welcome in Classic Telescopes. This includes binoculars, spotting scopes, and other antique/vintage optics that don't fit neatly into the other forums.

In the past, I have collected vintage binoculars and telescopes, but I usually posted about the binoculars in this forum and the telescopes in Classic Telescopes. This was not because there is no audience for binoculars in the Classic forum - it was because the audience here in Binoculars is more familiar with binocular optics and can usually answer technical questions much quicker than in Classics. Also, when I would acquire a vintage telescope, then I had to decide which forum to post - the modern equipment forum like "Refractors" or the Classic forum. For example, I used to own a 3" f/15, early-1980's, Vixen achromat. If I posted about it in Refractors, it wouldn't generate much discussion because the overall focus is on newer apochromatic models. But, when I posted in Classics, it generated more discussion and comments - because the audience can better appreciate older models of scopes, even if the scope in question is not a true "classic" in the same sense that a Unitron or Brashear is.

EdZ is correct about adding new forums - it's not likely that a Classic Binocular forum will be added. Not because it's a bad idea, but because the target audience would be very small.

Best regards and clear skies,

MikeG

That's fair enough!

Excuse me.

For me it is fine to write on Discussion Classic Telescope (or slightly change the name to "Classic & Historical Optics").
Thanks anyway for your kindness and quick response.

Even this I think is not the right approach.

I'll quote Mike, with whom I agree. It would seem the most appropriate place on these forums to get questions answered or get feedback on binoculars, classic or otherwise, is right here in the binocular forum.

Your desired audience is not necessarily a small subset of classic instruments as much as it is a small subset of binoculars.

Would it not be easier just to start a THREAD in this binoculars forum to cover the topics ?

No problem for me.
It was only a small proposal but without any controversy.
If you could please many people, and if you could do ... Ok! ... but if it is not ... I repeat ... no problem.
To me everything is fine even then and I understand perfectly the reasons that I consider absolutely right.

Thanks & bye

The vintage & Classic binocular thread ?
