NGC 6946, Fireworks galaxy: SSPro 65 x 5 minutes with an SCT 11 with a 6.3 reducer. My focus may have been off but strangely enough, it only shows on the top left corner for some reason. Comments (good or bad) are welcomed.

I guess maybe some part of your imaging train is not quite square with your optical path? I say that because I figure if it were optical aberrations there would be some symmetry on the opposite side of the image.

I did say "guess"

It's possible. The camera may have slipped on one side. I'll pay closer attention to this next time. I remember that I got impatient with the focusing that night. I should have spent the extra time to do it right. Thanks for your comments.

Here is Stephen's quintet: 50 x 4 minutes, I used a 3.3 reducer but spaced it to give me a reduction of .5; moon was very bright that night:

Trying to figure out what you are doing to your data. You have lots of time on 7331 but what you are showing can be captured in 1 x 4 mins. I think you are clipping the data. I'd like to see the tif for NGC 7331.

Th moon was almost full for most of these images (except the first one). But I will post an unprocessed image file of NGC 7331 tonight. I have trouble understanding it myself.

If you wish to process my file and see what you can do with it, here is the unprocessed 70 Meg FIT file for NGC 7331 (I used the median option when combining the files):

If you are not familiar with Megaupload, you must first enter the code that is shown on the page, wait for the countdown to reach zero and you then click "regular download".

Took a quick try at your data and found a few issues. I processed using Pixinsight and did a background extration to fix the vignetting, but it was really bad so it didn't work to well. I then used Photoshop for some quick curve and level adjustments. The stars seem to be rotating around the middle which suggests field rotation due to poor polar alignment. The stars also have a lot of coma which is probably caused by your reducer and the spacing. I don't know enough about it to really give you a lot of facts. Maybe someone else can chime in. The focus also appears off, but it is hard to tell. I don't know how you are focusing but I would suggest making a Bahtinov mask. I'm at a loss as to why you have not captured more detail. With 50 x 4 mins there should be more there. Poor focus will loss a lot of detail when stacked. When the subs aren't exactly the same due to focus, field rotation or coma, when stacking, all the subs may not have been used. When it finished stacking did it give you the total time? Just a thought. Thanks for letting me play with your data. Take care.

Hi, I gave it a shot as well. I couldnt come up with anything much better. Unfortunatly, there was indeed a problem with focus. That stinks, all that time....Its happened to me as well, Thats when I made my Bahtinov mask, it really helps. Also, I agree, some pretty serious field rotation. Are you on an EQ mount? if not, probabbly need to cut the sub lenghts in half. If you are, its just polar alignment.
I think the artifact on the right side of the picture is an internal reflection inside the scope. I think you mentioned the bright moon. Maybe some flocking might help, not sure.
Anyway, thanks for posting the link, I enjoyed playing with the stack.

Thanks for trying. Using a 3.3 reducer wasn't a good idea. I did use a Bahtinov mask. I am using an EQ-6 Pro mount but my polar alignment was likely off. I also need to collimate the Celestron SCT 11. The vignetting is normal because of the large CCD chip of the CCD Pro. I have used a false flat to reduce the vignetting.
