I had a good supply of the opthalmic fuzzy wollen pads from Salem sitting around for years. Haven't used them much, for I generally get into the situation where a pad or two lets go and comes loose. Kind of a pain. So I was using them to hand polish this mirror and they were mounted on a grooved solid glass tool. About 30 minutes was all they could take, and they sloughed right off.
Looking at the tool's surface, I had an idea. Painted it with blue layout, just enough to get a good coating over the glass tool's surface, and maybe seal some of the small cracks to prevent the water from going underneath and lifting the pad off. Worked, like a charm! And when finished polishing (~3.5 hours) they were still stuck down. But they lifted right off, and pulled the layout with it. No gum still stuck to the glass either. Thought this might be a good tip. Mark

When I was using pads like that I found that heating the tool and then really mashing the heck out of the pads got the contact adhesive activated. They still came off sometimes, put I've used them recently for doing flat polishing (flat as in mirror backs, that is) stuck to aluminum carriers, works quite well.
Best, Mark
