Hi. I've recently received a Skywatcher EQ6 Pro (actually it's the NEQ6 Pro, but I'm not sure what the difference really is) and am looking to mount my Televue NP127is on it. I have the Televue 5" rings, and the mount came with a pretty long (13"?) Vixen style plate. It seems I have a couple of options and I'm looking for recommendations as to which is better or if there is a third option that is best:
- The Televue rings have a bar at the top that spans both rings and makes the set very rigid, which is good. However this bar isn't very long - maybe 7" or so - and the only mounting plate I have that fits the rings when they are fully assembled like this is the Televue Vixen style dovetail which is quite short (maybe 4-5" long). Frankly the Televue Vixen style dovetail seems a bit short to be using with this mount in such a way.
- Or I could separate the rings -ie not use the top bar that joins them - and mount each individually on the 13" long Vixen dovetail that came with the mount. In this case I get more separation between the rings, which is good, but I lose the extra rigidity of the top bar between the rings. One other plus: the long dovetail seems to be more secure in the mount clamp than the Televue one, though I have no real evidence that such is the case.
Has anyone else come up with ideas for mounting the NP127is on this mount? Or maybe has a suggestion for a better Vixen style plate than the Televue one that still allows the fully-assemled Televue rings to be used?

For that scope, I'd head to the ADM site and get a Losmandy style saddle for the Atlas. The Vixen style dovetail and that scope are asking for flexure problems. I'm assuming you plan to image with that magnificent refrator, yes?
If so, then you're going to be pushing that mount's weight limit due to the extra goodies that you'll need for imaging. That's the reason for the better saddle. Good luck with it!

Check my post on Atlas upgrade. I just received my ADM dual saddle for my Atlas, same as the EQ-6 and this should work for you. The ADM lets me use my current Vixen dovetail or upgrade to a Losmandy plate. The difference in support and ease of installing my 6" refractor is greatly improved.

I recently purchased the dual saddle for my HEQ5 Pro and it works perfectly. It is easy to install and makes mounting the scope much easier, takes Vixen or Losmandy style dovetails and is way more sturdy then stock. Definitely worth the investment.

Hi Jon,
My solution for mounting the NP127is on an LXD75, for what its worth. I kept all the original TV 5 inch mount ring parts intact, including the supplied BPL 1098 bottom plate. But I did remove the rectangular plastic bolts, and bought an 8inch Vixen style dovetail plate for $30. I then had a friend machine appropriate holes into the dovetail, and countersink in screws about 3.25 inch apart as shown to suit the BPL 1098 bottom plate. Its very strong, albeit I don't do any AP work at all. And because I have not altered the geometry of the rings at all, I didn't have to alter the TV carry case at all when storing the scope, as shown.
