PST setup
      #3388634 - 10/14/09 06:43 AM

It is funny how what passes for my mind works sometimes...

I was never interested that much in Solar, had a few looks through a white light filter, thought "meh" and never bothered again.

All the comotion about the PST passed over me as I thought if I can't see anything through 102mm, I'll never see anything good through 40mm.

At no time did I even consider finding anything out about Ha filters, instead I just lumped solar observers in the same kettle of fish as lunar observers. Not my cup of tea, I thought smugly.

Then last weekend, I don't know why but I started looking into solar observing again and got all excited about Ha and ordered a PST.

Maybe it was because I finally finished outfitting my TV85 and 102 about a month ago (no small feat living in Australia with a mortgage and a young family) and missed the gear hunting.

Yay, researching equipment again!

Anyway, after that long and unnecessary introduction I was after some opinions on the following - I am planning on mounting it on an EQ1 and will start off with a 12.5 ortho in addition to the 20 kelner it comes with. I will then determine whether a 7, 6 or 5 ortho will come next through comparisons of different settings in my 3-6 zoom.

Has anyone done the EQ1 annd/or worked out which orthos (or other designs) work for them? I would be grateful for any opinions...

I have an EQ1 but have not mounted my pst to it. I use a camera tripod which works great. I use a 12.5 ortho and a 15mm plossl primarily. Today I tossed my TMB 9mm and loved the view. So far, from my EP collection, the ortho gives me the most crisp/sharp view. Congrats on the PST, you will love it!

The PST works at f/10 and (especially given that the seeing in strong sunlight is usually rather poor) you won't benefit from an eyepiece shorter than about 9mm. Low light levels rob contrast. I found the EPs I used 95% of the time with my Ha PST were 18mm & 12.5mm orthos (Baader Genuine Ortho).

I use a 12.5mm ep almost exclusivly. My mount is a Celestron alt/az with slow motion controls. It is easy to follow the sun with it. Yuo probably already know that the PST has 1/4" threaded holes ( 2 of them) for a photographic tripod.
Enjoy; Don T.

Thanks for sharing your story. Very similar to my own. I just recently order the PST, scheduled to arrive later this week.

I read a few reviews and posts and decided to go a slightly different route. I ordered a Celestron 8-24 zoom to go along with the PST. Not sure how it's going to work out but I'll let you know when it all arrives.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only previous doubter to recently get the solar bug.

Yes, I have mounted my PST on my old EQ-1. It works OK, but the eyepiece location sometimes gets a little awkward (the tube is not rotatable unless you cook something up externally), and the PST's box hits the clock drive housing sometimes. As for eyepieces, the only one I use anymore in that scope is a 7-21mm zoom, as it covers all the bases quite nicely. Clear skies to you.
