a blue fireball (protuberance detail added) new
      #3383058 - 10/11/09 12:21 AM Attachment (31 downloads)

Hi all,

I received a new camera the other day and got out today for a first light image. The PGR Scorpion (1600x1200) captures the full solar disk with my solarmax90 and A-P stowaway refractor. This image is made with two individual frames from the recorded video. The seeing was not good enough to stack multiple frames. The tiny active area that Pete posted earlier can be seen just below and to the right of center.

The full image can be seen here:
http://www.avertedimagination.com/img_pages/blue_fireball.html

Linked below the image are a couple of IR images captured in my backyard while testing the new camera.

sunny skies!
Alan

Awesome image, Alan!

Seems to be a good camera - I hope to see more images with this equipment!

Splendid image, Alan. Amazing depth, and, of course, your usual exceptional image processing.

But, what range of near IR / IR? I visited the PGR site and looked at the various sensors offered for the Scorpion, but finally threw up my hands as the their web site assumes you already know a great deal about their cameras and the various detectors offered.

How does the IR sensitivity help with solar H-alpha imaging? I'm a little confused......natural state, actually.

Hi Jim,

The IR comment referred to the floral images that are linked in the copy below this Ha solar image, which is, of course isolated at 656nm. I do enjoy shooting terrestrial scenes with the CCD cameras - they are very sensitive to stuff like plants that radiate in IR wavelengths.

thanks,
Alan

Thanks for sharing your comments! I've added a close-up of the prominence shown at the top of the disk.

cheers,
Alan

Yup, my confusion. Thanks for the clarification.

So does the new camera have better red sensitivity than other cameras you're using for H-alpha? What kind of detector, CMOS or CCD?

Thanks.

It's a Sony monochrome CCD 1600x1200 4.4 micron pixels... slightly smaller than those in my DMK41AF02, so it should be slightly less sensitive. There is no shortage of available light when imaging the sun so that should not be a limitation. The big chip running with the older firewire protocol (1394a) does read out slowly, though... that is a drawback.
