I see Antares makes, and Hands on Optics sells, .965" Plossls. I'm not familiar with this particular line, but I'm aware Plossls are pretty good, and this scope deserves some good ep's. Also they are only $20 each. Sizes range from 6mm to 25mm, and there are eight in the line.
Now this little baby has a Towa lens, and we know that's good (I've verified that myself).
What is a realistic high power for lunar observation with this scope?
And what three would you recommend, if you would recommend them at all?
The sizes are 6,7.5,10,12.5,15,17,20,25.

Doug....I'd go the full spectrum of range with the 6, 12.5 and 25. I want my powers as far apart as possible when the seeing conditions warrant it.  Mike

Have you considered the .965" orthos and Kellners available from Kokusai Kohki? Not all of the focal lengths are available in the orthos, currently, but the Kellners can all be obtained. Prices are about $36 each for the Kellners and around $53 or so for the orthos. A little off the beaten path, I know, but would make an unusual set of eyepieces for a unique scope. Check them out at: http://www.kkohki.com/English/kkohkiparts.html for yourself. I myself am strongly tempted to order the set of Kellners in 1.25" for planetary usage.

Doug, 100x is not too much power for this little scope. I'd definately get the 6. In my plossl line-up I have a 13mm (Orion Explorer II back when they made them in .965), and Celestrons 10mm, 7.5mm, and 6mm.

Not at all. In fact, I've had pretty good success using a 5mm Vixen Ortho in my 66TE for a whopping 120x!

I did indeed, but I already have the complete UO Abbe line up in 1.25", and could use a hybrid diagonal for them.
My intention is to keep a small dedicated set for just this scope, in the size it uses, and to keep the investment low.

I thought of that too, but I also recently got a brand new Meade .965" 2x Barlow, and I think if I keep to the longer lengths, I can take advantage of the longer eye relief they provide, and get the higher powers I need.
I figure the 25,15,10, and the Barlow. What do you think?
Glad to hear this little one will handle 120x. I had it up to 86x, and it was crystal clear, bright and detailed.

That's pretty much what I'd have suggested. I personally have a hard time getting my eye close enough to a Plossl with a focal length shorter than 10mm. It's hard to see the full field of view when they're shorter than that; I'd imagine .965" Plossl eyepieces wouldn't make that any easier. I may have to pick up a few of the longer length ones made by Antares; that's a more than reasonable price.

To add just a little to this 50mm classic thread:
This discussion inspired me to exercise a couple of 50mm Towa units last night. Transparency was horrible, but I was still able to appreciate the optics in these little scopes. I used my Tasco 66TE (pictured above) and a Meade 220 I acquired from a fellow CN'er, and once owned by another "famous" CN'er who spoke quite fondly of the little OTA. The 2nd OTA was to be a parts donor, but . . . it's too good to dismantle. (I did swap dewshields, tho).
Anyway, I would be hard-pressed to declare a winner as both telescopes performed flawlessly. Fine detail on Jupiter with easy polar shading and (just maybe) a hint of mottling in the equatorial bands at 120x. Don't laugh, but for giggles I even barlowed a 5mm Ortho (for 240x !!!) and still perceived banding - but quite mushy.
Epsilon Lyrae was a confirmed split - even through the murk. I should probably admit that the tougher of the two pairs was only heavily notched. I am sure that on a better night it would be clean.
I browsed a few OC's in Casseopia, glanced at M31's shapeless LP-diluted core and went inside in hopes for a better night tonight.
What a great scope. More than a match for the Messier list from good skies. (Gotta try for M74 to be sure).

So what ep's besides a 5mm Ortho were you using? Any favorites? Any comment on the Antares .965 Plossls?

Hey Doug, I wish I had a couple of .965" Plossls to compare.
Other than LOTS of OEM kit .965 EPs that came with various classic scopes (many of which are very good), my .965" case includes a Vixen set containing the Orthoscopic 5mm, a Huygenian 12.5mm a Kellner 25mm and then a Circle T Kellner 40mm. I also have a couple of very good homemade Huygenians of about 17mm fl. Those and a very good .965" Japanese barlow and diagonal and I'm good to go.
While some of the good "kit" EPs seem as good (those in my Lafayette case especially come to mind), I prefer using those listed above.
I would be interested in how noticeable the Plossl's FOV is on these long fl refractors....

Right now my .965 collection consists of a brand new Meade 2x Barlow, a 26mm Kellner Sheldon sent me, and a 10mm "Konig" I got off Ebay. Now I know it isn't a Konig or Koenig, but it does does perform well, and is rated for a 60deg AFoV.
Plus of course, I have various H's, R's, HM's, and SR's, most very short focal length.

Wouldn't a Plossl be better than a Kellner? Is there more eye relief with the Kellners?
