As the topic says, is there a way to use a standard GPS untit that has a serial interface together with a CG-5 mount?
I have the cable thats connects the hand controller to a computer through the RS232 serial port. My thought was to connect that cable to a standard GPS unit becouse the GPS that celestron has is d-mn expensive...
Any thoughts???

Yes and no.
You can't just buy a cable and hook up your receiver to the scope...but... If you have NexRemote, you can use your GPS receiver (with NMEA output) with its NexGPS module for free. But you have to have NexRemote.
I question the need for GPS with a GEM, anyhow...all it does is enter time, date, and location for you. It doesn't do anything else, and won't make your alignments any better.

I'm just a lazy git, thats why I want a GPS... but, I will not pay the huge amount of money celestron wants for there CN-16.

Well, not as much as the CN-16...

I've never used one...can't vouch for it. But I found it a while back when considering the CN-16. Now I just manually enter the site. Probably takes less time then it does for the GPS to acquire an accurate signal

I've got a StarGPS-NX (Internet site) that I bought from Canada in a price cheaper and smaller size than the Celestron NX16 , I haven't tested jet I'm still awating for my CG-5 GT mount to arrive in Australia. Whith this GPS unit the supplier provides a telephone double adapter that plugs into the mount hand control socket where the hand control and the short side of a cable (Celestron special connection cable also supplied on request)is connected and the other long end goes to the back of the hand control unit, hope this will help.

StarGPS, thats something I have to look at. Seems affordable 
I'd be happy if you reply here with your opinion when you've tested it

As Uncle Rod says, it's probably easier if you have a laptop already, to use a GPS connected to it via a serial port and then connect to the mount via NexGPS. My CGEM came with the NexStar Remote software and I just connected my Garmin to it via the laptop. It makes uploading GPS info to the mount easier since you don't have to covert the displayed lat lon from dec DMS to DMS. But again, it just depends on whether you have the aux port already or have a compatible NMEA output GPS unit.
