Greetings! It occurred to me that after all of the information I've read about problems wearing glasses, with binos with short eye relief, there has never the mention of wearing contact lenses. Is there a problem wearing contacts while looking through EPs? I wear progressive lenses that are antireflective. If I could use the contacts for viewing should the corrective lenses be for farsightedness or nearsightedness? Also, should they have an antireflective coating? I didn't ask about if that's an option. I would only wear them for viewing!
Thanks again for all of the advice. I decided on getting the Fujinon 16X70's.

I asked one eye doctor about contact lenses and she told me that they would NOT be as sharp as my progressive eyeglasses, so I never tried them.

Hi I wear contacts (bifocal no less) all the time for regular viewing and observing and find that they work well for me. I also have regular glasses , but just can stand the on off on off all the time. As far as near or farsightedness I don't know. some one mentioned TORIX contact lenses for astigmatizm, and I will try them after my next eye test, as I get a little flaring naked eye in the stars. I wear contacts all the time, and they are so comfortable I don't realize they are in, maybe you could give them a try?

No, not at all. I've used contact lenses with my optics for 45 years; no problems yet!

I don't understand the question; are you farsighted or nearsighted? You get contact lenses made with the same basic correction that you need for infinity vision with your current eyeglasses.

I use contact lenses with my 16x70s most all the time; if you are less than 6-7 diopters nearsighted or farsighted there is probably enough focus range to use them without glasses or contacts. You'll have to put your glasses on to aim them though! Astigmatism is another matter, though, and contacts become more problematic.
Enjoy your new binoculars!

I'm nearsighted, ~2.75 diopters, with no astigmatism, and used to wear soft contact lenses. I found extended astro-viewing without contacts to be superior; sharper, less scatter, and more comfortable. Binoculars and eyepieces are optimized for infinity focus, so ideally it is best to be corrected for distant vision, though the difference in view when corrected for near vision is very small.

I used to wear soft disposable contact lenses while observing all the time. Then I started to see the detrimental effects of prolonged observing while wearing contacts. My contacts would slide around my eye slightly and cause stars to distort severly even on axis. I also noted that as I observed for longer periods, my contacts would dry and yield a fogged over effect on the image. This happened consistantly even after using eye drops and frequent blinking. I like to observe as long as possible with my eyes open. It is an unconcious habit of mine. A couple of times my eye dried to the point of a lens falling out! I slowly realized that contact lenses were NOT conducive to a pleasurable viewing experience, even though I really wanted them to work. Some of my binos don't have enough eyerelief to work with glasses.
Also, does anyone know if wearing contacts dims the image slightly? I suspect this to be the case but as I have no method to measure this...
I now use binos with very long eye relief and with glasses on perhaps everything except for the most critical binocular observations.
I tried combining contact lenses and binos w/short eye relief and it didn't work for me.
Just a reminder, critical observing should never be done wearing contact lenses or eyeglasses (except astigmatism + widefield observing)!

I’ve had similar experiences. I would love to wear contacts, but the drying, moving and bluring is tiresome.
