Minor emergency... Please help!
      #3391394 - 10/15/09 03:20 PM

I got an email from someone last night that they were taking some mirrors to Spectrum Coating on Friday for coating and asked if I want to get mine done along with them. So, I have to get it ready to go and drop it off by tonight. The directions on Spectrum's website say to remove all inks (among other things) from the mirror. The back and side of mine were marked on by a sharpie marker. I've tried 100% acetone and 91% isopropyl alcohol. They worked about the same. Each took off a lot of the ink but neither was able to remove the stains completely. Is there something else I can use to take it off? ... And, just out of curiosity, what difference does ink on the mirror make to the coater?

If you used acetone and got all the ink off you could, I would say that what is left is just a stain and would not out gas while coating. I think your good to send it. The coater would be worried about out gassing of the ink when the mirror is place in a hard vacuum to do the coating. Out gassing would cause contamination and possible defects in the new coating.

You might want to try to contact Paul at Spectrum and ask... he's very close to you- Here's his contact page.
