Well, with the double rod, things are indeed better, at the expense of about 1.5oz. (I could get it back if I shifted to a double aluminum rod arrangement, I guess.)

Keep in mind that aluminum has 1/3 the stiffness of steel, for a given cross section. So the steel in the long run is your best bet.

Great! Glad things worked out for you with a relatively simple solution. I like simple...

"In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual." Galileo

12.5" F5.3 Dob on EQ platform
8" F7 planetary Dob / EQ Platform

Current ATM projects:
Xtal-Controlled EQ platform motor drive - finished... It works!
Motorized focus for planetary (moved to the bottom of the list for now)
10" F5.5 Verylight PushTo

Thanks everybody. It's really great how I can post a query, and within a couple of hours get half a dozen solutions. I didn't adopt any of the offered solutions in the end, but they got me thinking in the right direction, namely the direction of something with parallelism and spacing, such as I-beams, channels and tubes.

By the way, the scope is now basically finished, though I will improve the light shield eventually, I expect, and I need to mount an RDF.

I did suggest adopting a different cross section such as an I-beam or rectangle.
