What has been used in the past to soften and make pliable old hard flat power cords? The motor cord is the original. Mike

I hear that Tai Chi is very good for flexibility.

Hmmm, if its a 120v supply, might be safer to replace the cord rather than risk a short from deteriorated insulation on the original. Mark

Hey Mark,
I don't think it would be a safety issue. It's a "tough to bend" issue.
I have the same cord on my scope and was wondering the same thing but the question has taken a back seat in my brain. I just straightened mine out and made sure there were no kinks. Otherwise it works fine.
Mike, if you get an answer make sure you tell me so I don't have to ask again. LOL.

My cord is an 18g(?) flat twin wire and brown in color. There are no cracks or breakdown of any kind in the insulation and has nicely soldered connections inside that I unwrapped and covered with wire nuts. I just want a nice pliable feel to the cord that's all. Mike

ok James, do u think this would work. There is an automotive product here in Australia for car vinyl upholstery called "Amor All" Its a silicone based liquid that softens vinyl. http://www.armorall.com.au/home.aspx Sure to be something like that there too. Mark

I've heard that certain petroleum products tend to ruin rubber. I'm not sure about vinyl. I've sprayed silicone on it but that didn't soften it much. I think it will have to be coiled up and placed for a period of time in a "bath". But if I use the wrong stuff it might "eat" it up. So I'm rather leary at this point and thought someone may have done something similar in the past. Mike

Here we call it lamp cord and it's readily available. Is the power cord (lamp cord) molded into the socket plug at the end? A picture of that end of the cord would be helpful.

Lew....I know where to get new stuff but I want to keep it original. There is nothing wrong with this stuff I just want it not to feel like a Tootsie Roll. Besides getting new stuff thru that grommet would be impossible at this stage. Mike
