Friends, I bought a beat up Towa 339 for a song. I've got the mount looking and functioning like new. I've sanded the tripod legs down to good looking wood and now want to refinish them. Please give me suggestions of what will bring them back to original color which was a very dark glossy brown. Thanks, Bill

Bill,
I have owned a few 339's, thats including the re brands, and all were a deep reddish brown. I would say a Minwax mahogany gel stain would be good. Test it first on an inside piece of the legs that will not be seen. Than i like to use Tung oil because it is easy to use. Don't forget to paint the gold marker rings. Just my two cents.
I am also redoing a tripod, it is very similar to the 339, it is my father's old transit tripod that is really old and beat up, but it was his and i think it can have some life put back into it before it meets its doom. Maybe i will start a post on the restoral.

A small scope that gets used often is a better investment than a big scope that stays in the closet.
Unitrons, you spend more time looking at them than you do through them.

Thanks Brian. I got no responses for a few days so I went and bought dark Walnut Minwax. I'm about 1/2 way finished and I think it will look good, but slightly different from original. Thanks for your answer. Bill

My second choice was walnut. Have you decided on a finish? Your post inspired me to do a restoration post on some legs. The legs i am working on are very similar to the 339 legs you are working on. Please post pictures when you are complete, about 25% of the group here owns, has owned, or will own a 339 or one of its clones.

Brian, I haven't decided on a finish...I'm open to suggestions. This 339 was recieved in terrible condition. However the mount now looks like new, the legs are coming along and I'm planning on buying a Carton lens to replace the original chipped lens. Should be a fine scope when its completed. I'll post my final results. Bill
