Wow! - Rod, what a beautiful piece of prose. I could see every event you described in my minds' eye. Every now and again you read something that leaves you with a very satisfied feeling inside. This is one of those......

Thanx - Rob

Thanks for your (overly) kind words, Rob.

I will admit this one came from the heart.

Don't know that I'd want to live through it all again, but it's fun to remember them days.

Well, crud: I have a 6" f/8 out in the garage, just *that* close to finishing and I just never got around to it. Now I have to. Thanks a lot!

Wonderful article, really brought back some fond [edited by spaceydee] - er - memories. I wish I could count the hours I hoovered away poring over the Jaegers and Edmund catalogs! Not to mention those "scopes thou shalt never own", Unitrons and Caves.

Thanks for that!

Yes, this does bring back memories of pouring over the catalogs in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Never built anything, but it does come back...

One question: After all that worrying about the flaws in your first mirror, did you actually ever compare the performance of the first two mirrors?

Cheers!
-Jim

Rod, enjoyed your story immensely! Your commentary on the '70's brought back many forgotten memories. Thank you. Russ.

Wonderful story. My wife is reading the story as I type this. She says, "Hmmm! This story starts the year I was born!" Of course I asked her permission to quote her.

Next year is the International Year of Astronomy . One of the ways several colleges are planning to participate is by building a small telescope. While you make the point that building a new one may not be cost effective, you also very effectively convey the excitement that comes from seeing details on a planet or the moon through your very own effort.

I will have to share this with some folks who I know are planning a telescope project.

Nice trip down memory lane.....even though I was born in 1970.

Seriously, nice article Rod.

That is a good article. I came across it while I was trying to find information on where to get aluminizing done on an old 12.5" reflector project. It is too bad that you had a negative experience with the aluminizer. Do you or anyone else know of a good place to get my mirrors recoated?

Welcome to the forum, Liberty.

You will more than likely find the answer you need here on Cloudy Nights. However, I would suggest posting this question in the Reflector Forum here on CN, instead of at the end of an older discussion thread. You will get what you need much quicker, that way.
