I've been giving some thought to changing the default East alignment stars the CGEM offers. If I can do a 3 to 4 star alignment using only West stars, then I can move into the shadow of my backyard and avoid the neighbor's random porch lights. As it is now, I have to setup towards the back of the yard to see some East stars above the house. Is there an advantage to using only East stars other than they'll be up much longer than West stars? I can always realign later if necessary as those East stars move West. For me, directly East is vastly more sky glow from cities and an airport. Any thoughts, specifically is the sky model created during alignments better one way or the other?

I do not have cgem but here is what i found. Here is a link to cgem manual: http://www.celestron.com/c3/images/files/downloads/1235085036_cgem11097inst.pdf
At page 19 there is instructions how you can change east with west filtering. Here is the quote:
In order to ensure the best possible full sky pointing accuracy, your computerized telescope automatically filters and chooses its initial alignment stars so that the first two alignment stars are located on one side of the Meridian and any calibration stars are on the opposite side of the Meridian, as indicated by the "W" or "E" displayed in the upper-right corner of the LCD. East/West filtering can be changed simply by pressing the MENU button at any time during the alignment process.

Yes, thanks Neptun2. But was just curious as to whether the HC software favored one side or the the other after alignment is complete. Guess I didn't put my question together well enough, just was wondering if other folks had noticed any better performance either way since the same HC firmware is used across a number of mounts? Thanks again.

The reason for doing your first two stars on one side of the meridian, then the rest on the other side is that the firmware is compensating for cone error, the slight mechanical misalignment between your scope and mount.
You could do all of your aligments on one side, however, when you slewed to the other side of the meridian, you can just about guarantee that the side not aligned will have fairly poor gotos.
As far as the stars go, you don't have to use the stars chosen by the mount. If I did that, I would have to have a tree filter to see the stars that the mount would pick. I just use a chart and pick stars that I know will be 1, visible and 2 a fair distance apart.
