AP-900 drag in RA
      #3394966 - 10/17/09 05:54 PM

I posted this on the Yahoo AP GTO user group, but it seems like there is some more immediate feedback here.

I recently purchased a 6 year old AP-900GTO mount. It is like new. One question that I have is when rotating the RA axis toward the east, about 2/3 of the way to the horizon, there is a drag in the RA axis. If you listen carefully, you can hear it.

Toward the west everything freewheels no problem. And under power with everything locked, it works well.

When I received the mount in was packed in the styro-foam peanuts that got into everything. I blew these suckers out with compressed air, but I wonder if I have some crumbs in the RA assembly.

Is it normal to have this drag? Any opinions?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Doesn't sound normal. Could be the clutches were overtightened at some point and the inserts were deformed. I'd suggest you give Howard a call at AP and he will walk you through the replacement procedure. Or, at least, give the best diagnosis of your problem. Well worth the phone call. AP's customer service is top notch.

I agree it's not normal. But I'm afraid I can't diagnose it. It might just be in need of a little lubrication on that side. You're supposed to put some 3-in-1 in the holes of the clutch thingies once a year, you might try some in the position you think is sticking. Since the sticking can come from anywhere, you presumably should put a drop or two of lube into all four just to be sure you're getting the "real" drag spot.

Or return to AP....
