classic scope and (what) modern mount ??? new
      #3388376 - 10/13/09 11:52 PM

Hello friends,

I guess many of you know this problem : you have found or bought a nice vintage OTA but no mount was included.
So you have the problem : what "modern" mount can I combine with my vintage scope ??

I find this is a difficult problem today !

For me it's a absolutly No Go, to combine a classic refractor with a ugly, trash, chinese mount like a CG5 or so !!!

A few years ago, you can find a for example more often a nice Vixen new Polaris. This was a "modern" mount that was stylished like a vintage one and it was no shame to combine a New Polaris mount with a classic scope...

but : A UGLY EQ5/6, CG5 and so on with a nice vintage refractor/newton ??? Oh god - what a horror !!

Whats your opinion ? And : do you know mounts from today, that will fit in style to classic scopes ??

Not so long ago, there were the russian TAL 1 mounts for example. "Modern" mounts, that are built like vintage mounts, but TAL has stopped its telescope and mount production till 2011.
Are there other vintage styled modern mounts on the market ?
I guess : no ! Or not ?

Regards Michael

I do not know what size of scope you are trying to mount, but if by "modern" you mean new rather then used how about an Orion EQ-1 or EQ-2? I have not seen them in person (only online images) so I can not vouch for build quality, but the EQ-2 sure is a close match to my 30+ year old Tasco mount. Plus if you supply your own tripod the EQ-1 tabletop version is inexpensive - and then you do not have the reputed to be not-so-great stock tripod.

If you want things like tracking, goto, or have a large OTA though I am sure neither mount will be suitable.

Tasco 11TE-5 'Lunagrosso': 4.5" Newtonian, 900mm f/7.9
Meade DS-2114S: 4.5" Newtonian, 1000mm f/8.8
Galileoscope: 50mm Achromatic Refractor, 500mm f/10
Tasco EQ-2-like mount w/ clock drive
Celestron CG-5GT mount

You can get a "pretty" (well, if you think so) TAL that don't work worth a hoot. I am not at all sure what you mean by "stopped production _till_ 2001.

or

A not so pretty CG5 (in your opinion) that works great. Much depends on whether you want to LOOK AT or actually USE Mr. Telescope.

I have a 60/900 Shrine Manon. I bought an Orion Versago and a 120ST earlier this year. Then bought an additional dovetail and use the Versago with the 60mm. To get rings, I bought the smallest I could find, then shimmed with velour-type weather stripping. (No tripod, and the clamshell for the scope was broken)
Works pretty well.

Obviously you are not familiar with the CG-5ASGT, which is neither ugly nor trash. In fact it looks quite good, and at the price, for what it does, and does well, it is a steal.
And just so you can see a classic scope on the mount, here you go...

Yeah, and while I often use my 10TE on a "nice" Vixen Polaris, I'm equally happy using it on an "ugly" Orion Astroview (when the Polaris is busy).

For my smaller 50mm scopes I use a gray, American made, seven million dollar mount.

It has an autopilot, is gyro stabilized and has a 30mm gatling gun that fires up to 4,200 rounds per minute so I can permanently extinguish offensive light pollution sources while observing...

I needed a mount for my Unitron 4" and Steve M was nice enough to sell me one. It is white as is my Unitron so i am hoping it will match.(still in postal transit) If not i can always paint the mount black and make some wood legs.

A small scope that gets used often is a better investment than a big scope that stays in the closet.

Unitrons, you spend more time looking at them than you do through them.

Hi Michael:

Televue made a very nice walnut legged GEM that was VERY sturdy, could be motorized and had a nice vintage look to it - It was called the "M4S". It probably came out around the time of the EQ2, but is much, MUCH nicer IMHO :-)

Preston, doesnt the gatling gun introduce some unwanted vibration? and is the observing position as uncomfortable as it looks?

Boy what I would give to borrow that for even as little as 5 minutes. I'd finally be able to have a clear southern exposure - topping a few dozen trees by walking fire side to side. I've seen those rounds cut a tree in half - a expensive long distance chainsaw
