Greetings! I've recently posted this question, within two other posts; however, I guess it's better to create its own by itself. A lot of people and companies (that sell the Bogen Manfrotto tripods) suggest using the 501HDV head, with various tripods or larger binos. Which one would be better for the 16X70's - the 501HDV or the 410 Geared Head? I only know about the 410 from Ed Z.'s CN Report, where there's a picture and caption, "Fujinon 16x70 on a Bogen 410 Geared Head on a Bogen 3211 Good Combo." If he uses it, that is good enough for me! But, I would still like to hear from members regarding the differences. Thanks!

Yes I still have and still use the 410 geared head, BUT far more often I use my 501 fluid pan head. The 501 HDV is a little step up. If you're looking to buy one head, I'd get the 501HDV.

Thanks again Ed, for all of your help and time. I'll be getting the 475 tripod with the 501 head.

In my mind, the 501 & the 410 are best suited for different uses. I have both... the 410 is good with my Lunt 60mm Solar scope and things such as that- whereas I use the fluid head for my digiscoping 80mm scope... and many people prefer them over anything else with binoculars. The 475 tripod is an outstanding foundation for either- I use mine a lot. The geared center column of the 475 is a real asset. Currently in use with the 410/Lunt combo.

I own both of these heads and a pair of 16x70 FMT-SX Fujinons, which are pretty heavy binoculars. Both heads work very well with these binoculars, but I prefer the 501HDV just because it is a lot easier to pan around and it does seem to be a tiny bit more stable. You don't need the handle either you can just move the binoculars wherever you want, no backlash at all, and the internal 5lb spring loaded counterweight works perfect for this size load. You can set the tension pretty light and they still stay where you put them even aimed at zenith.
