Hmm, most of the 'hard science' stuff seems to gravitate to this forum. I know I find the detailed spectrum stuff very interesting, but, if it goes off to the planetary forum, i'll never see it. I dont have the time to wade thru all of the forums 'just in case' there is something of real interest pops up in one of them once in a while, and I've focussed in on this particular one because it seems to be where all of the 'hard science' data actually shows up and gets discussed.

Ditto for me. I wonder sometimes how much harder science stuff doesn't get posted, or noticed by those who care, because it doesn't fall specifically into variable star or radio astronomy.
For that matter, a lot of the spectroscopic stuff that gets posted here doesn't really fit in with variable star observing, either, but I like having it.
Wish this forum was more for all more scientific aspects of amateur astronomy.

Spectroscopy is technically not part of variable star observing. I allow it because I too have an interest in it and usually most spectrums received have something to do with variable or potential variable stars. Plus there is no where else in Cloudy Nights where spectroscopy is covered. (And not enough interest to get its own forum.) But I feel it should be limited to stars. Got to draw the line somewhere.  Nytecam did post his spectrums in the Planetary and Solar System Forum and they are quite impressive.

I'm with the others who responded before.
Spectroscopy is for sure as much part of VSOing as photometry (and polarimetry) is. The question is at most if the target can be considered appropriate for this forum.
IMO even things like Maurice posted are placed here better than anywhere else on CS as the ppi and other non-scientifically orientated users don't care much about such things while the ones who read this forum do. Even if the targets are not always right on topic.

An added argument in favor of planetary spectra are that they're really, mostly, just reflected sunlight. And the sun is a little bit variable

Well... just a suggestion... I don't visit this forum too often as I'm not a variable star observer or a radio telescope person (yet... although I have ambitions  )
The Beginning Imaging forum just changed its name to Beginning and Intermediate Imaging.
Could I suggest that this forum change its name to Variable Star Photometry, Spectroscopy, and Radio Astronomy?
Maybe that is too bold of a suggestion for someone so new to the forum...

I think this is an excellent suggestion. I haven't contributed anything yet to this forum because I'm still learning. However, this forum is one of my favorites because of its focus on serious science. I think it would be a shame to let semantics limit the breadth of such an interesting - and educational - forum. Adding photometry and spectroscopy to the title seems very reasonable to me.

I don't know. This forum doesn't get a ton of traffic so it's not like expanding the content will make it more difficult to find anything. Besides, when was the last time you saw a *non-controversial* deleted post generate this kind of traffic?
It would be nice to have a "scientific observing" forum--which is basically how I've treated this forum.

I agree! Since I do spectroscopy from time to time it would be nice to have just a science forum. Doing the planets and moons is pretty cool science at that!

I like the idea of a "scientific observing" forum as Brian suggests. I feel that would mean an observation with a quantifiable measurement.

All I can suggest is that you contact some of the Administrators and give then your suggestions. When I started moderateing this form it was purely Variable Stars. Then Radio Astronomy was added. I'm not sure I want to see more things added to this Forum as I feel its diluting the origional purpose of this forum. This is just my personal opinion.

And there's not really a lot of connection (well, through QSOs possibly) ...
Personally I'd rather see seperate forums for spectroscopy & radio stuff, even if there's not much traffic there.
